Where is a good hail storm when you need one,I bet that would have freed up a few positions in that line.

Bucky1 and I were so close to going. Was going to be a fun road trip. But neither of us wanted to be "that guy" in line who was so desperate for booze that we prostituted ourselves. It's seriously just not worth the stress and bother. Just wait for the bubble to burst and then enjoy the best KY has to offer.

Would have been a hoot if you were local, even just to people watch. Having said that, driving 1-2 hours then pulling up that madness.....that's when you turn right around and find a good 24h breakfast place.

All I can say is: I'm so damned glad I didn't go for it! Not hat I seriously considered it.

I mean (as many have said) with so many fine Bourbons around so many shelves... and at less than a third the price of much of this rarified stuff so many are pining for... well; just pour me a couple ounces of OGD-114, maybe over a small cube and leave me alone to enjoy it. Hell, in Michigan, I've given up even looking for Pappy, or the BTAC. It isn't worth the aggravation any more.

screw that. i dont even want to TRY pappy, because of all the hype. If i determine i actually like it, then realize I have to stand in this stupid line for a bottle of it.....i just dont even go there.

Id rather walk in there, grab a case of whatever it is i actually want (and pay what theyre gonna pay for one bottle), then laugh at them on the way out. its prestige and snobbery, or just plain flipping, that fuels this.

I mean they must know ahead of time about how much they are getting, shouldn't they at least tell people to go home?

They're probably hoping once you get in and they're out of the "good stuff", you'll

"settle" for something else and not leave empty handed after wasting time on line.

Well said. Marketing 101 without thinking about it.

I look at that line, and I think to myself, how many mom and pop liquor stores could I hit dusty hunting before I would even get in the door at TPS? A dozen? A couple dozen?

Pappy is tasty, and worth the msrp for the 23, but I'll try my luck at finding some Louisville OWA to get my SW fix.

People stand in lines for many reasons even when knowing they don't have a chance. In the old days it was rock concert tickets and every Black Friday it still happens at malls around America... just being part of a scene can be cool. Haven't we all done something just a little insane. Should TPS come up with a better system...well it still gives a no connections person a fighting chance...nothing wrong with that. And one can always argue there is something as good or better or cheaper but let's not deny the status and acclaim VW and BTAC has acheived. It is excellent whiskey.

Like spending a Saturday hitting a few dozen liquors stores across the west texas countryside? Yes. Yes we have. :)

Well said. While I don't see myself standing in line for hours and hours for either, it isn't because of the quality. And if I had absolutely none in my cabinet with zero prospects of getting any . . . killing half a day (or night) standing in line might not be out of the question :)

I must have missed what they were waiting for. It sounds like Pappy only. If so, it seems like they would know that beyond the first 10 or 20 in line, no one else would go home with any. Did they announce their allocation? Were other options, such as BTAC, also available? If not, then it seems like a waste of time.

I know on Black Friday, most retailers tell you how many of each sale item they have available so that you can determine whether you are likely to get what you want.

According to their email it was both their '13 allocation of BTAC and PVW, though bottle code seem to imply it was leftover PVW held back from last year. They did mention "much less than last year" in the email, but didn't get specific about how many.

Anyone know if there is buying and selling of line positions?

Damn! I wish I would have thought of that! If I were to camp out for 18 hours, could I earn a weeks pay?

All they said was their allocation was smaller than normal.

I am 8 minutes from the front door or TPS and as much as I love this place, I was not planning to be anywhere near that place yesterday. I know someone who went down right around 8. He talked to a couple people in line and said people that had been there since 4 am got shut out. Not sure what time you needed to be there to get any.

I think they had a whopping 6 bottles each 15 and 20. No 23. Not sure about the others.

What happened to the line from VW saying there should be more availability this year because they only have the Fall release?

This was holdover stock. Everyone will have to wait in line again come the firstish of Nov.

So they must have been talking about the BTAC when referring to "this year's allocation" being substantially less?

The total number of bottles of nearly every limited release has increased dramatically in the past year. Yet stores are getting less and less.

More on premise accounts looking for $20 plus pours. It also means deeper market penetration at the retail level. More stores in more areas want the limited bottles.

Not to mention the "Internet grey market effect". Items that used to stick around for a few weeks are gone in less than a day. The first person in a state posting a pic from the car triggers a swarming effect.

While i do see more of it at restaurants these days....i have also found bottles i NEVER would have expected at very odd retail stores. It's not that i think they shouldn't have the right to buy/sell, just that the clientele didn't seem to match the price range. Guess every shop has a few high rollers?

Eric, i like your view on posting a pic causing swarming. I spoke with a store owner last week who said a very similar thing. Said foot traffic and phone calls spike as soon as someone believes they have it. There's benefits to the instant communication via social media and smart phones...with every new technology there is also negative.
