Ten years ago there was a substantial savings when buying by the barrel but today the only reason is to get something unique and it ain't cheap.

So now we make it a sliding scale. I have seen this done before. Angel's Envy has a price of $38.99. Forum members get a discount. How much, depends on how many. 0 to 10=$37.99, 10 to 20= $35.00, 20 to 30= you get the idea. Member calls up and gives payment. The more we order, the bigger the discount.

My impression from your original question was selecting a barrel as a group.

Your Angel Envy scenario seems more like a retailer offering stock on hand

for the group to buy. Apologies if I'm misreading your explanation.

Group buy and group pick are not the same thing.

Of course there's no rule that says we can't pool together a few friends and go pick out our own barrel.

Sorry to revive a dead topic, but in general, have people had success with shipping?  I've read some fine print and there's the issue of no guarantee that the bottle arrives safe (or if there is extreme heat, etc.).  Are there issues/complications I should be aware of?  I know liquor shipping rates are expensive in general, but mostly concerned about bottles being broken or if temperatures adversely affect unopened bottles.

I've done this on numerous occasions from reputable websites and have never had an issue.  I've had probably 20-30 bottles shipped from at least 7-8 different vendors, and two of those are in Europe.  I'm sure if I keep doing it, I will eventually run into a problem or two, but so far so good.  It bears mentioning that I am able to legally ship alcohol to the addresses of friends and family, so I assume I would have some kind of reasonable recourse if something went wrong.  Not sure what happens if you shipped it illegally.

I've found some really nice deals online and given price differences have saved a bundle.  Shipping spread over 3-6 bottles lessens the blow and not paying sales tax offsets shipping and then some.  I've received many bottles.   Some from across the country.  Some from Europe.  The excessive temp warning is generally for wine as it's more delicate at extreme temps.  Excessive heat might pop a cork on a higher proof bourbon bottle but isn't a huge worry for me and frankly corks have popped on people driving a few miles so that risk is seemingly ever present given a hot trunk or backseat or random luck or lack thereof.  Any reputable store should package your bottles well.  I've yet to receive a questionable packaging job.  A few leaks here and there but nothing close to even an oz.  I've shied away from some Euro shops as I'm unwilling to pay an arm and a leg for shipping and then assume all the risk of shipping, but only you can decide how much risk you're willing tom take.

My experience is similar to those who have already responded. A reputable store packs it well and I have so far not lost a bottle or a shipment, including multiple shipments from UK/Europe (I wonder if Brexit will impact shipping rules at all?). Heck, I have had shipments from the UK get here faster than ones from other states!

I've been buying from K&L since I lived in California.  Since moving I've continued to buy from them and have had no issues with shipping.  They will hold my orders for me and when I get enough to make it worth shipping I have them send everything out, this helps to keep the shipping cost down.  I've never had a bottle get damaged in transit.  I thought shipping would add cost but now that I live out of state they don't charge me sales tax and the cost of shipping is less than the sales tax I used to pay in CA.

Cool, thanks for the replies.  My confidence in shipping is growing.  Probably will take the plunge as I can't find some whiskeys in MN at all.

I've had a few shipments from Binny's over the years and never had an issue.
