Hullo and Good Evening from London! It's miserable at this end.

SO...couple of weeks sees the 28th annual celebration of my life on this Earth, what the hell do I treat myself to? I fancy something nice. Found an establishment that exchange a quite considerable handful of cash for a tipple of some Van Winkle. My word what a drink. Utterly sensational. Alas, I've more chance of finding the answers to lifes problems at the bottom of a glass than finding a bottle of that to buy,

What do I buy and why? Big fan of Four Roses, Makers, Jeffersons and I don't mind spending a pretty penny if it's worth it.

and.....go...!

What you should buy is totally dependent on what you can buy. As you note, there is not much chance of getting a bottle of VW. The all-too-obvious suggestion is Old Forester Birthday Bourbon. The latest gets good reviews around here. It never hurts to treat yourself to something you already know you are going to like. My wife's "birthday bourbon" is Blanton's. Mine is Booker's. But, as we say, your mileage may vary. You might spend the next couple of weeks casually reviewing the comments on the Bourbon of the Month thread on this website.

By the way, you need not spend a pretty penny. In the US, there are numerous high quality pours for under $30. I don't know what the relative cost might be in London.

I live ice just down the road from TheWhiskeyExchange here so I have a decent supplier! Blantons is pretty sexy, have. Bottle of 'straight from the cask'. Not sure where to place the money though, been trawling the amazing BOTM some decent stuff.

Bloody decisions....

If I found myself in London for the evening you can bet your bottom dollar I'd be drinking Blanton's Straight From the Barrel.

Which release? They're all pretty good, but opinions vary pretty wide. The newest release (PHC 7, Promise of Hope) is a single barrel product with reports ranging from it being good, but overpriced and a bit disappointing, to it being a truly elite and respected bourbon. This of course depends on which barrel, and of course, your own palate and opinion.

If you set your birthday settings in your profile you won't have to wish happy birthday to yourself.
