Jonny Drum Private Stock?

Does anyone drink and/or love Jonny Drum Private Stock? I saw it at my Whole Foods $31. Apparently it's 15 years old and 101 proof--sounds good to me.

It used to be 15yo. Check the label, if it has the age statement - buy. If not, YMMV.

I had a couple of bottles of Johnny Drum back when it was bottled at 12 years of age. My take on it was basic Heaven Hill whisky under a different label at twice the price.

Still, $31.00 isn't bad for a 15 year old Bourbon but yes, make sure there is an age statement on the label.

I bought a bottle a while back when someone suggested it as a slightly chearper alternative to Rowan's Creek (which I like). Similar in taste, and slightly cheaper, but I like RC better. That said, it wasn't a 15 year old, and cheaper than your price. I'd grab it at 15 yrs./$31 just to check it out.

I tried it after reading several positive reviews of it. Mine was not age stated. Mine wound up getting taken to a party so others could use it as a mixer. Wasn't a fan, even in cocktails at home.

Yeah, I didn't have as negative a reaction as petrel, but I can't envision buying the NAS stuff again. I'd still be interested in trying the 15 year old, though.

I had a bottle of the 15yr a while a go now and it was really quite nice, i would buy again if it was 15yr

That's right Guy, no age statement means the contents are at least four years and one day old but nothing more. They can be older of course, a blend of 4-6-8 or whatever, but any age statement on the label applies to the youngest whisky in the mix.

Willett generally puts an age statement on their proprietary labels if the whisky is six years or older so NAS is probably less than 6.

I found some old Jonny Drum NAS posts on the SB boards. It seems that a lot of companies dropped the age statement to get product out the door when the bourbon boom happened.

I will just assume that this Jonny Drum over at the store is 6-8 years old. I'll keep it in mind, but I have other things to try first.

Guy the only safe assumption is the whisky is four years old.

I've never had the age stated stuff, but for $25-$30 it is one I restock on if I'm out while in Kentucky (very few stores around Atlanta carry it, and when they do - typically a few bucks more). To me, it held its own with others in that price range. I bumped it against ETL, and it definitely came across to me as older (more oak influence), with more caramel - but more peppery and not quite as well balanced. Only way to know is to buy one and find out

I quite like this whiskey. The profile of the bottles that I have had, have that older HH slant that I love. At that price, I would pick it up.

I have a bottle of Johnny Drum 8 year black label square bottle and it is not pleasant. The strong wood/char taste overpowers everything else. Reminds me of the strongest bottle of EC18 I've tasted but stronger. I am amazed it is only 8 years old.

It's a given that some parts of the warehouse will mature whisky better than others and the less desirable parts are the source of bulk whisky for the market.

The reason I asked for clarification is due to the wikipedia entry I found that said Private Stock is aged 15 years. Today, the bottle I am speaking of says Private Stock on it and has no age statement.

Again, I will assume that Private Stock is not aged 15 years.

I've seen some Jonny Drum around here lately, no age statement, so I passed. Also, I saw David Nicholson advertised as 7 years old. I looked at a bottle. There was no age statement. I think at one time both these brands did have an age statement, but not now.

Please forgive Guy. Being somewhat geographically challenged, sometimes we here in the States aren't always sure which language is used in any given country. I don't think Guy realized that y'all in Oz speak Merican, just like us!!

Okay, but two of the ones you just mentioned are running at least a year or two younger than that at the moment. The point is that all you know for sure is that it is at least 4. That, and what your palate tells you.
