WarlKicken
Evening Chaps, just a quick one; if I'm completely in love with Jefferson's Reserve and presidential 18....can you suggest anything similar? I'm struggling to restock the same bottles...
smknjoe
JR is pretty easy to get in the US. The 18 was a one of kind production that can't be replaced really. They also have completely different flavor profiles since one is a ryed bourbon and the other is wheated. Try Very Old Barton Bottled in Bond to replace the Jefferson's Reserve and Weller Special Reserve or Larceny to replace the Jefferson's Presidential Select 18yr.Did you ever try the PHC 2012 Blend of Mashbills that was suggested a few days ago? 393foureyedfox
ive never had, or seen, jefferson 18, but i cant imagine larceny could even be comparable....what is it, one third as old?
smknjoe
ive never had, or seen, jefferson 18...then why reply to a thread asking for something that has a similar taste to Jefferson 18? Similar age does not equal similar taste. Not by a long shot. Plus, I'm taking in to account that WK is in Europe where he may have a very limited selection and very high prices. squire
WK was posting from London yesterday so presumably he resides in the United Kingdom. Once he tells us the brands available to him perhaps we can be of assistance.

How much you hate Four Roses, how bland wheaters are, how all of us who are willing to spend more than $50 on a bottle of whiskey are wasting our money.... BourbonGuy
Since they pulled Jefferson's 18 and now have Jefferson's 21, I would imagine it is the same whiskey, aged longer at double the price. I have purchased Jeffersons 17 and Jefferson's 18.I was hoping to taste Jefferson's 21 at NY WhiskeyFest. But they said they did not bring any due to limited supply. I guess Jefferson's Reserve is not close enough?

I guess Jefferson's Reserve is not close enough? The 17 and 18 were just one-offs of some S-W wheated bourbon they came across. The reserve is their standard ryed recipe bourbon that is very easy to get in the US. The 21 year is new version they have released and it's not a wheater. It's hard to give WK a very accurate suggestion without knowing what is available to him in London (like Squire said.)He said he's having trouble finding the standard Reserve. The 17s and 18s were wheaters. The Jeff 21 is a rye recipe bourbon, definitely not a longer aged 17 or
squire
The Zoellers, like other NDPs, have to work with the product they can get. To their credit some of their choices have been well received but we should not expect consistency.

squire
Of course they can, but there are restrictions on alcohol as being a hazardous, combustible substance.

Old Dusty
FEF, you seem like a passionate guy and you tend to post with passion as well. Nothing wrong with that except.....you stake out positions that many more experienced folks on the site know from years of tasting and sharing and buying are not supportable. For example tasting one expression of FR and declaring the brand worthless. I can tell you I am a huge wheater fan but if I only ever tasted Rebel Yell and declared all wheaters were garbage I would have really missed out. And folks on the site would have tried to set me straight. You can't make broad generalizations by proof/brand/style and declare the rest trash. Well you CAN, but your opinion won't carry much weight. If you know what profile you like and what you want to spend on bourbon then more power to you. But I would urge you to have an open mind and benefit from the collective wisdom found on SB. In the long run you may find the box you have placed yourself in is larger than you think. whiskeyagonzo
I couldn't have said it better myself Eric. I have learned so much about bourbon/rye and my own tastes in the past couple of years. It truly has been an enjoyable journey. I initially started out with only a taste for rye. Now I would say my bunker is probably a 60/40 bourbon/rye ratio. Anyway. Good stuff there Eric.
393foureyedfox
but i never said all 4R stuff was worthless. I said i had a barrel proofer and loved it, and I had a single barrel and couldnt even drink it. and, since i generally wont spend over $50 or go under 100 proof, i was reluctant to take my chances on another 4R product....when, for the price, i can get something i really like instead.overall, im open to alot of stuff and enjoy trying new stuff regularly, but i stick to the $50/100 proof rule, as I dont think (again, to ME) that anything warrants over that amount unless its really old.....and the fact that ive never found one thing sub 100 proof that i like, even in the least. i am quite sure there is some reaaaaly good stuff over $50, but i am just not willing to cross that line. but, thats just meyou know what they say about opinions....i definately have my opinions, but im not gonna slam one of you guys over your opinion. i may publicaly say i dont like your favorite brand, but im not going to discount your opinion.geez...
