GaryT
I find when I taste blind, the odds of my spilling it a bit increase by a factor of 10! Always drink with your eyes open. For you, for your family, and for the whiskey. This has been a public safety announcement
GaryT
IMHO, to get something along the lines of JPS 18 you'd need to do some dusty hunting. Possibly for JPS 18 While age is one factor, the juice is another. There aren't a lot of aged wheaters out there. Not sure if you took an older WLW and diluted it if the profiles would be similar? I haven't had enough JR to offer any direction there, sorry!
squire
Yes, and always taste vertically, it's hard to nose when you're horizontal.
jfw
Back to the original question, Assuming you are in London... In a similar profile to Jeff 18, try the current Weller 12. It might also be worth picking up a Weller 107. Both wheated like Jeff 17/18, both great. I'd also go for a Parker blend of Mashbills. Not on the same profile, but worth a try are the various Blantons expressions only available in Europe (barrel strength, silver, gold). All of the above are available at the whiskey exchange in London (except for the barrel strength, but I have purchased it there so I know they do have it on occasion). I'd also branch out and try one of the Four Roses products. JoeNote - I'm in no way affiliated with the Whiskey Exchange.
smknjoe
I've never had anything that was even close to JPS17/18 as it's some really unique and good stuff. It's not as oaky or sooty like the W12 can be, and it's not as syrupy sweet and hot like OWA can be. That's why I suggested Larceny since it's more balanced than those two and maybe a little more complex than WSR (even though I suggested that too.) As for the Jefferson's Reserve, that's a hard one to pin down as well. It is not in your face at all nor does it have any qualities that really stand out. It's strength is it's balance and well integrated classic bourbon flavors that drink very easily....but I guess none of this matters now since WK has decided to get some PHC 2012 Blend of Mashbills which is just as worthwhile (if not more so.) hn4bourbon
I also agree with most that it would be tough to find anything off the shelf and readily available that is close to the JPS17/18. If you like JPS18, you might enjoy one or several of the following: W12, OWA, WSR, Larceny, or others in the same vein. I also like JPS18 and for my taste, I enjoy W12 and OWA especially an SB blend of those two.As to Jefferson's Reserve, I too have had a hard time figuring what it taste similar to. When I drank my bottle of it, I kept thinking to myself that it is very very similar to something else but can't put my finger on what it is before the bottle's empty. squire
H the 1783 brand from Heaven Hill comes to mind but it's been some years since my last bottle of Jeff Reserve so the batch could've been completely different.

WarlKicken
Apologies but I don't know what you lovely chaps mean when you use abbreviations like OWA, etc. I worked some out but am a bit lost. If there is a sticky so I might enlighten myself, please poke me in that direction....

WarlKicken
....made my mind up to support JPS18 with PHC6. Payday tomorrow, I even took a day off to thoroughly enjoy the occasion, then I find JPS21. Bugger. Anyone know anything about it? I could buy JPS18 and PHC6 for the price of one JPS21.......... Yeti
JPS 21 has nothing in common with JPS 18 beyond the three words in the name. It is a different recipe bourbon from, presumably, a different source.

Yeti
It's all anecdotal, but batch 13 is supposedly the demarcation for "good" and "less good" batches. Your taste buds are all you need to go on in the long run, but I know a little guidance is always welcome. I would suggest you get a batch 13 if you have the desire and availability, and skip the JPS 21.

That said it seems like there was some odd things going on with the batch numbers on these bottles. Some appeared to be hand written in red ink and then later some appeared that looked to be printed but used the same batch numbers. I don't think it was ever determined what the difference was, if any. Then again Jefferson is generally not the most informative NDP with regard to their whiskey. Some discussion of the batch number oddities in this thread.
