portugieser
Well, there are about 1/10th as many bottles as GTS, it's put out by a small company that doesn't benefit from the economy of scale that Buffalo Trace does, purchase includes an invitation to a private event with the Henderson's and other Angels Envy team, and it has an elaborate package. None of those could matter to you at all, but those are the primary explanations. That's helpful - thank you. Think I'll pass for now.Cheers
squire
This Bourbon in a box business goes way back but I can't figure out whether the new ones are just copycatting or whether folks actually think it's a good idea.
Painkiller
http://smokybeast.blogspot.com/2013/11/review-angels-envy-cask-strength-first.htmlI had decided against it and bought a few other things, incuding a gorgeous bottle of JPS18 (and damn if that's not good!) ,and then I see this review! Yeti, I don't know that this year's includes the invite or not, sadly not that I could do it anyway, but sh*t, this friggin' review has got me all worked up now!! Squire, talk me out of it, or next thing you know, I will be posting a pic of thi$ bottle on my lap! I'm NOT made of money, you know...... F'in hell, it is SO within my grasp! grantsi
I would buy this...but can't find it. Anyone got a lead on a bottle in Chicago?
Yeti
That's this year's invite. I purchased one, and for the sake of conversation I'll try to illustrate my personal motivations. I've tried various AE products and have enjoyed them all. I like finished whiskies and this is the premiere offering from a label with a quality reputation. Where are competing 10 ish year old, heavily finished bourbons, at any price point? These are, presumably, among the last of Lincoln Henderson's personal creations/selections. And ultimately, as mentioned earlier, I wanted it. I have thought repeatedly about passing last year, the box looks awesome, and maybe I'll try to go to the private event. Unfortunately the investment gives me some pause I don't get with a bottle half the cost in terms of storage and consumption, but that's life. I'm glad I have it now, and I think I'll be glad I have it whenever I open it. The only real answer when someone asks "is it worth it?" Is... "Well, is it worth it to you?" You just posted enough BMH to drown a man. Who distilled that? And should it be cheaper because a different source took it off the still?
LostBottle
If a different source took it off the still and that source was a large distillery, than economies of scale are definitely at play - that was the argument I was addressing. If they actually distilled what was in that bottle than the argument could be made that it was much more expensive to make the bourbon and thus, the increased cost - but they don't distill a drop and that argument it moot.By the way, the average cost I paid for the BMH Rye I have in my bunker is nowhere even near $180/bottle. Furthermore, it is very old 18-23yo whiskey. I bet AE CS is not anywhere near that age, but they left the age statement off, leaving me to think it is much, much younger (i.e. cheaper).I don't own a bottle and will not have the opportunity to purchase one, so I have no dog in the fight. I am simply pointing out that the QPR seems a bit steep on a NAS NDP bottle. ~400% more price for ~43% more ABV is a bit crazy. All of this said, if you enjoy it and feel it worth the cash, this is all that matters. Cheers. Edited November 18, 2013 by LostBottle

I will convey that Kyle Henderson claimed the whisky to be 8+ years old when selected for finishing, with an additional 2+ years of port finish. So a minimum of 10 years age, anecdotally. The bottom line for me is that I have lost $200 in a casino in mere minutes more than once. I'm not a gambler usually, but I am a drinker. Watching two bills vanish without a 60% kiss goodnight is a lot tougher than with one, but that's just me. I view the AE similarly to the HP Valhalla series, all things considered, and I've got one of those too :-D
