MtnDew
So, I'm in charge of providing a whiskey for Thanksgiving this year and while I'm a huge fan of scotch, I'm thinking something a little more domestic would make sense. That being said I'm a little confused as to what whiskey would make the most sense to enjoy after a traditional Thanksgiving meal. I thought about breaking out my 2012 THH but I've heard that pairs better with Christmas due to the spices. So that has me turning towards bourbon, maybe a wheater like WLW? Or something with a little less punch (ABV) but on the rye side of things like a 4R SmB (non barrel proof)? I have a decent bunker, for a non bourbon aficionado, with about 50 bottles on hand so there is plenty to choose from.Does anyone have any suggestions? It does not necessarily have to pair with the food though I can break it out during the meal if that makes more sense. This is the reason I posted here and not in bourbon and food, I had planned it as a separate "course" all unto itself. Thanks!
jwacky
I'm bringing some Big Bottom port finished to share with 'everyone', in case some non-whiskey drinkers want a pour. Seems like it'd compliment a huge meal beforehand, too. I'll have some other stuff for the more serious bourbon fans.
Flyfish
Will be drinking FC at Thanksgiving not because it is particularly appropriate to the season but because my daughter and her husband will be here. Both went to grad school at SC and FC is the official beverage. You might find that a nice soft wheater would go well after the turkey or while you are watching the Macy's parade or the football game.

MtnDew
I like this suggestion because AE is a pretty smooth bourbon that would appeal to a broad spectrum of people. And it is a special type of bottling for a special occasion. You could always bring a more higher end bourbon that you think bourbon drinkers or more adventurous persons might enjoy trying. Special Reserve
Wild Turkey Gold Labelled 12 year will be the Thanksgiving Day pour in my house. If I didn't have that it would be some other WT product. Isn't there a code that states you must have Turkey on Turkey Day?

Paddy
I'm in total agreement with the above. I wouldn't kick out anything named eagle if someone wants to bring one by either. I'll probably settle for a WT rye and some W12 for my holiday pouring pleasure. Cheers to each and all, whatever pour you choose! :toast:

393foureyedfox
I'm the only one in my family that drinks anything at all. On my side of the family, there's just sodas and tea. When we have holidays at my in-laws, they're a bunch of wine drinkers, and I dont feel out of place having a pour of anything over there. I would use your situation as a perfect opportunity to try some iteration of WT that I haven't had before. I've not had WT American Spirit, but the name sure feels welcoming to a Thanksgiving day libation! MtnDew
Probably going to pour Bowmans Gingerbread finished..That sounds pretty nice, I only have the regular John J Bowman so I'll likely skip that this year. I'm leaning towards pouring that AE Rye with dessert and maybe a WT with the food itself.I'm the only one in my family that drinks anything at all. Yeti
I'm hosting for the first time this year which means, in addition to being responsible for the bird, I'm pouring anything and everything I want. There will be some PVW for my father-in-law and some Four Roses and VOS as well. Might get the AE Rye and Gingerbread Bowman out after the meal. It's a non whiskey drinking crowd in general so going with something sweet and fun will likely be appreciated. If I broke out the "serious" whiskeys they would likely all think they were too strong. snifred
If I broke out the "serious" whiskeys they would likely all think they were too strong.Same here. We're hosting this year, which means I have my pick. I got my mom onto bourbon a few years ago after she tried to order a Manhattan with Canadian whiskey. I put a stop to that, and she's loved Buffalo Trace ever since. But only with a glass full of ice. She tried ER10 last time she was here and liked it so I gave her a bit of ER17 neat and she thought it was too much. At least I've made some progress...
