his first Bourbon. And I do believe Bourbon has it's newest fan.

The moonshine he was drinking the most was made in the backyard of an acquaintance of a friend of his. And when I visited him for Thanksgiving, he had some strange peach flavored nasty moonshine his wife had bought him from who the heck knows where.

Well, my eldest son was staying with him for Thanksgiving, and arrived early with some Buffalo Trace hand selected by the good folks at Market Square in Tallahassee. He texted me and said my brother in law (and sister) loved it, and to bring some of the higher proof stuff. So I bought some Old Grand Dad 114 and took it with me to Southern Alabama to visit my brother in law.

Well, he loved the stuff. He doesn't sip it, though. He fills a shot glass to the brim and downs it in one gulp. A couple of shots later and he's done. Not the way I enjoy it, as I like to take my time with it and enjoy it slowly.

Well, to each their own. But, regardless of how he drinks it, he very much enjoyed it. And I wouldn't even touch that peach flavored nonsense he had. And after some BT and OGD 114, he probably won't either.

For Christmas? It'll be Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve, 120 proof. And he shall be hooked on the good stuff for life.

Good for you, P'Dawg! .... And, good for your B'-in-law; subsequent to the recent "enlightening, eh? :slappin:

I have a friend who pours a fatty and then downs it in a gulp just like this guy. He 'likes' (how can you tell if you're just pounding it?) JD and EWB....and I guess if I was gonna pound stuff that hard, I'd go for the cheap stuff too. What fun is it to pound it like that....I guess the whole goal is to just get hammered. To each his own, right? I slowly sip mine, and rarely consume enough to even feel it. But, I don't like being hammered.

Id introduce him to the BIB world, if he's just gonna pound it. Cheap and gets the job done! When shooting, they all taste about the same to me. But, anything tastes good compared to 'shine.

On the last trip to Kentucky, I had a taste of moonshine that surprised me by its quality. It was like a very rich and flavourful vodka. It didn't taste like the typical white dog I've tried, and I've wondered if it was made from corn sugar. But there was nothing wrong with it, and it was much better than any commercial vodka IMO. There was a slight winy note perhaps, but I don't know how else to describe it.

I expect the winey note came from the yeast but the recipe was probably something like 30% corn and 70% Dixie Crystal sugar.

Some people just don't like to sip a beverage that's almost half alcohol and I respect that. A friend of my late Father would pour two fingers of whisky in a glass, swallow it and wait a couple hours for his next drink. That was simply his way. He was a cool guy who told great stories.

My first pours do tend to go down quite quickly, especially when I am using a rocks glass and just drinking, but I always like to give it a little swish in the mouth first.

People like this are why I keep a family size HH 6/90 around. If you're gonna pound it or mix it with soda, grab that one, not the good stuff

Corn and sugar: quite possible, quite possible. This was good stuff.

Yes, be generous with your guests. Hide the good stuff for when the cool people come over.

I'll share anything I have with my friends, but if I know they're gonna slam it or mix coke with it, the good stuff is kept away from them. I have two friends like that, and they like 80-90 proof anyway. The HH 6/90 came in in the top 3 in a blind tasting of 8 bourbons/whiskeys last year that we did at another friends house, and no one complains about it. Of those two friends, one is an ET drinker, and the other an EWB and JD drinker....so obviously, they're not too discriminating.

I had a friend who was very discriminating in that regard, he would only mix with real Coke and a real lime section.

Seems like putting a little cheap whiskey or even tea in some Everclear might be a good way to fix that problem. If they pass out early then you don't have to worry about wasting the "good stuff"!

I may know this BIL you speak of, P'cola. And, I cross the line and head to your fair city on my bourbon/scotch/beer runs. Our paths have probably crossed or may in the future.

I only like my Coke on the rocks and with no mixers.
