Old Lamplighter
Oh crap, here we go again. Remember people, ALL of the Jefferson's bourbons are ryed unless otherwise stated. They have been since the very beginning of the brand. And I'm sure they are not going out of their way to make it clear that it's not S-W...at least not until it's all sold. smknjoe
If it's S-W like the 17 and 18 were I'm sure they will put it on the label like they did with those. Just read the label and if you still aren't convinced then email Trey and ask him. He has been very open in replies to my questions in the past. smknjoe
Not to be rude, but who is Josh other than just another blogger? A couple of his facts are wrong. The brand has been around since the mid-1990's and started with the Reserve, the 17 was released in 2009, and the 18 in 2010. I do agree that it will likely not be a wheater since all of their whiskey has been ryed other than the 17 an 18.
mbroo5880i
Not rude at all. I have no clue who he is. It is interesting that two bloggers are discussing the 30-year. I just happened across his post today while scrolling through the really cool list of blogs on sku's site. I don't believe I had ever heard of him before today. P&MLiquorsEric
95% of those covering bourbon are simply "bloggers". The mainstream media care about thefts of pappy, pappy lotteries, makers mark releases and best of lists when bourbon is concerned.

squire
The source is someone who didn't have a use for it except to add some oak to the vat. Wonder what filtering process Castle used before bottling.

tanstaafl2
Josh at RWB doesn't believe so. I am not certain of his source. http://redwhiteandbourbon.com/2013/12/01/understanding-the-jeffersons-presidential-select-line/If someone needs to have the info spoon fed to them this seems a decent resource. I never found it that confusing. The 30yo bourbon has already arrived at least in some markets and at a recent dinner Trey Zoeller said it contained a blend of 30-32yo bourbons and "wasn't as dry and oaky as one might think" or words to that effect. I guess one would have to try it to see for sure. A rumor still persists that there is a 25yo rye coming as well as the 25yo bourbon that is already out there. But I haven't seen the rye yet. I tried the 21yo rye today and thought it was surprisingly good. Interesting that the speculation is that is Canadian and probably Alberta Distillery sourced. zillah
If I play devil's advocate here, not many 30 year old bourbons exist or have ever existed. In the whiskey world, a 30 year whiskey under $200 is nearly non-existent these days. For collections sake, it has value even if it tastes like wood chips. I have a feeling this stuff didn't pick anything up from the barrel as much and has just been sitting there. There is only a few hundred bottles. I don't think someone would put out wood tincture to swindle fools. The 21, while extremely woody, wasn't undrinkable. It is just old whiskey. Any 30 year old whiskey is never worth its liquid except for the age statement on it. For that reason, I would say this is a pretty great buy if you have the curiosity and money. Flyfish
If I play devil's advocate here, not many 30 year old bourbons exist or have ever existed.By conservative estimate, HH has something on the order of 37 bazillion barrels in their rick houses. It might be statistically possible for one or two barrels to get "lost" for 30 years. WT has "accidents" like inadvertently blending bourbon and rye. Then they yell, "Eureka." And, of course, if BT had 30-year-old bourbon, they would claim it was part of their dedication to experimentation and long-term planning.I just hope we don't get to the point where the only age-stated bourbons are that old and that expensive. tanstaafl2
The PHC 27yo was released in 2008. Pretty clear that HH had and probably still has old bourbon hanging around and it seems possible that they didn't use all of it in the PHC for whatever reason. Also likely that there were a few barrels a few years younger that were just hanging out amongst those 37 bazillion barrels!5 years later there is a 30yo bourbon that reportedly contains up to 32yo bourbon. Coincidence? Maybe! But I think not.
squire
In a taped interview Larry Kass, public spokesman for Heaven Hill, commented they had something like 20,000 barrels of 20-30 year old whisky aging in their warehouses. He also commented a 30 year old barrel left in the upper floors of a warehouse would be so evaporated that it might have only two gallons left in it and that was undrinkable. When asked what they did with that old whisky he said it went into their standard brands mixing vat to add some age and color. I expect they will also sell some to a NDP if the price is right.30 year old Bourbon might be a marketer's dream but you would have to pay me to drink the stuff. TunnelTiger
Actually what would benefit us is the introduction of a lot of NDP $200+ Bourbons and ryes to distract the flippers and the un-educated.
squire
What would really benefit us is if the leading status conscious trend setter writers and chefs would declare Unaged White Dog is best for cooking/mixing purposes. Of course they would rename it Le Chien Blanc or some such thing.
