In a taped interview Larry Kass, public spokesman for Heaven Hill, commented they had something like 20,000 barrels of 20-30 year old whisky aging in their warehouses. He also commented a 30 year old barrel left in the upper floors of a warehouse would be so evaporated that it might have only two gallons left in it and that was undrinkable.

When asked what they did with that old whisky he said it went into their standard brands mixing vat to add some age and color. I expect they will also sell some to a NDP if the price is right.

30 year old Bourbon might be a marketer's dream but you would have to pay me to drink the stuff.

Don't these ultra aged items end up in japan as well?

Japan used to be a big market, partially because of the example of older Scottish Malts. Heaven Hill sold 23 year old Evan Williams there long before aged stuff caught the public imagination here.

I assume you mean the 18yr? The 17 only had a few batches.

But all batches of both 17 and 18 are purportedly SW. Just that the earlier 18 batches (1-12) have been reportedly better than later ones.

IIRC, it was also explicitly stated on the bottles. A sticker saying something like "aged in Stitzel-Weller barrels" - so if you find one you should know with little doubt.

Before we make too much of being SW distillate we should be mindful the distillery operated for 20 years after the Van Winkle family sold it and the new owners cheapened the whisky with cost cutting measures. They weren't building a herd, just milking the remaining cows and some of that stuff was like a third generation copy of the original.

If the new stuff was S-W they would most likely put it on the label like they did the last time they used S-W whiskey (and the ONLY time they ever used 100% S-W.) They are well known to use regular ryed bourbon otherwise.

I've seen the Jefferson 21 Year Rye and 25 Year Bourbon in the wild. Too much money for me but they are out there.

Yes sorry, I meant the 18yr. Thanks everyone for the replies! I picked up a bottle of the 18yr. Batch #26 yesterday, I like it maybe a little better than the 17yr. Batch #2 as of now.

I'm guessing castle marketers are smarter than me, but they could have excited me with a harsh, nasty tincture of crud barrel if they told me where it came from.

Unless I'm mistaken this is very common practice in the entire industry. In fact Springbank (a Scotch whisky mind you) got rid of some old (30+ years) and under-proof (below 40%) whisky by blending it with 12 year old whisky instead of using water to bring that whisky down to 50 or 57 percent. With bourbon, it's a great way to darken younger whiskey without using colorant.

Has the JPS 30 landed in Chicago yet? None of my usual shops that stock the JPS line have any. Or maybe I missed it.

I was able to try some on a trip to Lincoln, NE. I liked it better than the 25. It was not nearly as strong with the oak taste as the 25 which really surprised me. It is over priced in my opinion, lots of other stuff I'd spend that money on.
