PcolaDawg
Not that we weren't very much aware of this already, it is still nice to know the English are coming around. :cool:http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/dec/9/english-born-whiskey-critic-says-scotch-out-americ/ Edited December 10, 2013 by PcolaDawg
squire
Yes, yes, I want our Native Spirit to receive the World wide recognition it deserves though while my loyalty is unrestrained my enthusiasm is dimmed by the prospect of more demand/higher prices. zillah
We all knew this already. I don't need Jim Murray pointing out the obvious to others.
Tony
I guess I was thinking along the lines of Squire. Stuff that is hard to get now will be even more difficult and prices will continue to climb.Best regards, Tony

ChainWhip
I'm glad that bourbon is getting it's well deserved recognition worldwide but c'mon really?! It's Jim Murray we're talking about here.
squire
If the Asian nations ever get the notion the best whisky in the World is made in America we will see significant price hikes that may be permanent.
ChainWhip
It's only a matter of time Squire. Some savvy marketing and poof, it'll reach "XO" status quickly. Plus, the bourbon profile is very easy to bond to - heck, anything tastes good after MaoTai/BaiJu.
squire
I expect the real barrier has been cultural bias. Even in our own Country people who don't drink 'know' the best whisky comes from Scotland and 'only Rednecks' drink Bourbon.
oke&coke
True but unfortunately that is one bias that is quick and easy to overcome.
squire
Yes, a businessman in Malaysia can get on the internet and learn enough about Bourbon to more than pique his interest.
Guest
The comments associated with the article are textbook trolling, counter trolling and sprinkling of idiots, dont know why I read them but I guess its like a car crash..Mind you its hard to resist jumping in and stirring the pot, theyre arguing about vodka, and which has the best taste profile! smokinjoe
This is really not much more from Murray, than what he has been saying for many, many, years. When most "World" whiskey writers had their noses firmly entrenched in the arses of every Glen-this and Glen-that, he was one of the few of them that gave American whiskies/bourbons their just due. Of course they all want on the bandwagon, now.

squire
Vodka tasting is like comparing rain water to snow melt water.
PcolaDawg
Heh. As a Bourbon noob I got all excited about an article where someone of authority "over there" finally had the light bulb come on that Bourbon = the best whiskey. Didn't think about what a sea change in opinion might do to the Bourbon price points over here. Starting to think I should have titled this thread: Oh heck no .... tanstaafl2
Murray seems to have a real hard on about sulfur. But I would just as soon he not make any mention of bourbon lest he really is able to affect its international popularity. Or put his focus on JD, JB and the like and leave the rest of it alone so we can continue to afford it!

ChainWhip
Why do you say he's in the pockets of Sazerac, Johnny? I'm being a little facetious but it seems like every whisky of the year for the past few years has been either a Sazerac or Glenmorangie/Ardbeg product. Please delete if inappropriate. smokinjoe
Facetiousness aside...I wouldn't necessarily call his choices chopped liver, nor question his integrity in making them. I can't really speak to the Scotches, but I can't argue with his Sazerac picks. Great whiskies, from a great Distillery. But of course, YMMV. I can't really speak to the Scotches, but I can't argue with his Sazerac picks. Great whiskies, from a great Distillery. But of course, YMMV.While I like THH (& have defended it on this board), his choice last year for whisky of the year 2013 is a head scratcher at best. Yeah, YMMV and all that but that THH wasn't even the best out of its BTAC brethren but then again, we all have different palates so...Given his Parker-esque reach in whisky terms, it's dangerous especially when his opinions are nearing Parker-esque levels of bourbon credibility. That said, I apologize for questioning his integrity on anything but as it relates to his motivation to sell more books.Back on topic though: I'm hoping American whiskies get more attention and emerging markets buy even more bourbon. I think strong sales only serves to bring more innovation and will allow the small guys that are doing it "right" more runway to succeed.Short term it will suck to see prices rise and more sub-par whisky come to market, but long term I think we will enjoy more innovation, better product selection and quality.
