For me MM has always been something to keep around for the bourbon and coke crowd (historically it has always been a Ky crowd favorite for this purpose). I was skeptical, but IMHO the 46 is on another level....more than adequate bourbon for sipping neat.

Not telling you how to drink your whiskey. However if you do opt for the Bernheim Wheat Whiskey I would not add any water or ice. It is too delicate and low proof to begin with. Any added water washes out the flavor.

I've had pretty much every wheater available. I never liked ORVW10 (compared to the rest of the Van Winkle line), but this year's reviews are good, so I grabbed a bottle. I've always preferred Lot B to ORVW10, but I prefer PVW20 to PVW15 which tends to be the favorite on this board. I actually prefer lower proof bourbons. WSR/OWA are a great everyday pour. I've only had one bottle of Larceny, but I really liked it and it may just replace WSR. MM is "old reliable" when I am out at a bar, especially since it has become readily available outside of KY for the last couple of decades. If you have easy access to VSOF, it is really good. Bernheim will help you refine your pallet and understand what wheat does for whiskey, but I've had a bottle sitting on my bar for a couple years. I just never reach for it.

I appreciate the suggestion. Will probably try this one as well just to get a clear idea of the wheat influence.

I usually like lower proof bourbons too. But I don't mind adding a fair amount of water to the higher proofs, and this year's ORVW 10 (the only one I've had) seems to hold water pretty well without the flavor getting drowned. I'm hoping to find the OWA to be as you said, a good "everyday pour". I do have access to the VSOF and plan on getting that one. If I get the Bernheim I suspect it might be sitting around a long time like yours has. But since I'm on this wheat kick, and I like to explore all the various whiskey avenues, I will definitely give it a try.

Are you ordering the VSOF from the NH liquor store, or getting it in MA?

Thanks, Ted

Neither. I live in Lebanon so am right on the VT border. All of the ordering I've been referring to in this thread is from the VT liquor store. Makers Mark and MM46 are the only wheaters I've found on the NH web site and in the stores. It seems to me I once saw some Larceny but at the time wasn't that interested. In any case, haven't seen that one lately. If you are interested, here is the VT site:

The Larceny 1.75 is back at Gordon's Liquors in MA at $39 less the $20 rebate. A bottle this big and this good at just $19 almost makes me feel I'm stealing it. But, hey, it's called Larceny so maybe that feeling just goes with the brand.

Whereabouts is Gordon's? That sounds like a good buy with the rebate anyways. I usually go to Kappy's at Wellington Circle in Medford.

Good to know Fitz, to have another option for stores in the Boston area when I'm down that way.

Very Special Old Fitz 12 year

Hate to even mention them because they are really lousy but to complete the list Rebel Yell and Rebel Reserve. There is also Nicholson 1843 100 proof. Basically current Old Fitz BIB in a different bottle.

Anybody want to put a ranking on the list... 1,2,3, etc with 1 being favorite?

I second doing it the old fashioned way. It's amazing how after a year I have focused on certain flavor profiles, many of which are in the minority here. It is what it is. Really enjoying my open bottle of WLW12 right now and I don't remember it tasting anything like this the last time I had it six months ago.
