What makes you stop in a unknown liquor store?

I was just reading the post: What's Your Luckiest/Best Liquor Store Find?

Then it got me thinking. In your area, what would make you stop at a liquor store? When traveling, what would make you stop?

I was on a major road in Port Jefferson. I saw this little hole in the wall store. Nobody was in it. I was tempted to stop, but was running late.

I just was wondering about clues that may turn a rountine search golden.

I'm with squire. If it's there, I'm probably stopping.*

*Standard Disclaimer: Provided I'm not running an errand for the wife and she is expecting said errand to be completed in a certain amount of time.

I can honestly say I stop because it's there.

If I'm by myself and I have the time, I stop. Doesn't really matter where it is or what it looks like. If I'm with my wife, negotiation may be involved. I occasionally travel around the state for work, and have been known to google locations of liquor stores before going somewhere.

That said, the majority of time I walk out without making a purchase.

Pretty much what he said. I will stop 99 times out of a 100 if by myself.

That describes me also.

If I'm alone, have the time, and it's convenient (no traffic snarls, lengthy u-turns, etc), I'll stop. I've never walked out with anything, though.

If I am by myself and have time I like to stop, keep hoping I am going to find something I would not expect to find.

If the wife is with me, there are not a lot of stops going on.

Best regards, Tony

This.

I've become so conditioned to stopping at any liquor store I have never been to before, that I pulled up to one while my wife and I were in the middle of a heated "discussion" regarding my recent purchases. I think that was the point she realized that as far as pathological impulses go, this is probably one of the least problematic.

For me it's; first: time available; second; curiosity about what may be on the shelves inside. Usually not much of note, but once in a while, a purchase ensues.

If I have the time, I stop in. Not every store every time, but if it's new to me and/or I haven't been in a while, I stop in. If you never look, you'll never find the 'good stuff.'

Same here.

Burglar bars and old hand painted signage are a plus.

As the bank robber in the opening scene of Dirty Harry says, "I gotsta know!"

• Do they have anything I haven't tried yet?

• Do they have any dusties?

• Do they have any great deals?

All of these things can be regional in nature. I've found bourbon that cost $50+ at home for under $30 in other states, plus brands we just don't have access to.

I just "gotsta" stop.

That's funny stuff right there.

...and I will +2 on that one.

+3. If I've got the time to do so, I stop in any store I've never been in before. And when traveling, I typically look for stores near the hotel I'll be at and make notes to their addresses so I can check them out.

My wife, bless her, keeps an eye out for liquor stores when we're traveling and lets me know if I've missed one. After 35 years of marriage I know better than to not listen to her . She realizes the "hunt" is half the fun of this hobby/obsession

I like to stop at the dirtiest looking, most dangerous looking ones. These are the ones where I find the most unique dusties. The brightly lit specialty whiskey shops already know what they have and what it is worth so you will never find a good deal. That's why you never buy a classic car from a classic car collector.

If I'm planning a visit, I research stores on Google and look for ones in less affluent urban neighborhoods, but not destitute, more blue-collar type towns (I've never tried a bullet-proof glass store). I look for stores that have been around 10+ years and have a decent physical size. In rural areas, I also look for older stores and dedicated liquor stores, not the grocery/liquor pantry. For me, this simple criteria increases the chances of a decent bourbon find and more often good scotch dusties simply because they are more expensive and have more of a chance of sitting around for a number of years.
