I enjoyed the 12 and finished my last bottle maybe a bit quicker than I wanted to, but the 9 yr barrel select is rapidly becoming one of my favorites.  The vitamin note is present but toned down by the intensity of the other flavors, and the proof provides enough bite to keep it interesting.  I'm paying about $35 a bottle and I don't look forward to the day that store runs out. 

 

I picked up a bottle of the 14 year and I can't find anything bad to say about it other than the price.  It simply isn't worth it and I prefer the 9 year anyway.  The 14 was noticeably wordier and the slightly higher proof didn't fundamentally improve it to any extent.

I finished off my first bottle of Dickel 12 for the Fourth of July; just a really solid pour.

 

I continue to be intrigued by the balance of elements that creates the vitamin note. With some water I get it to come out closer to a smokey charcoal note, which I really like as a foil to the otherwise sweet corn.

 

But in the last couple of drams I have yet another new discovery from this whiskey. . . . When I first got into smoking a pipe I tried a few of the old classic packaged pipe tobaccos (Prince Albert, Half and Half, Borkum Riff).  I added some water to the GD 12 and swirled the glass, sniffing periodically as i waited for it to open up. For a short time between the initial pour and the smokier notes opening up, there was a strong scent of one of those pipe tobaccos. I haven't bought any of them in a long time so i'm not certain which one it was.  In fact, it took me a while to even remember that it was one of those pipe tobaccos. I may need to buy a pouch of Borkum Riff with my next bottle of GD 12 and try to confirm my memory.

I bought my first bottle Dickel 12 yesterday and my first impression was a lot of charcoal flavor. I adapted and soon came to the conclusion that it's a decent pour. Unless I find a lot more charm in the tastes present in the rest of the bottle, it will probably be just an occasional purchase rather than something that is in the regular rotation of bottles.

Had a nice pour this weekend. I always enjoy GD12 and had a craving for its particular profile, it did not disappoint.

GD No12 definitely has a distinct flavor profile. That "vitamin" flavor seems to be stronger when the bottle is first opened and smooths out over time and with more space in the bottle. I think that distinct flavor is a combination of the high corn mashbill, the yeast and the barrels. There is a woodyness to the flavor (probably similar to the cellulose that is used in some vitamins), but the flavor also reminds me of traditional southern cornbread made with no sugar added. That aroma and taste comes through to me when I drink it. I'm a big fan of this Tennessee Whiskey, and much prefer it over JD Old No.7. The more premium offerings from GD are also very good, and for those that are put off by the "vitamin" taste, it is less noticeable in the older aged offerings. I always have several GD bottles open in my bar for when I am in the mood for that distinct taste profile...actually had to have a second pour last night because the first was just so good.

I've been reading about that "vitamin" taste that a lot of folks mention, so the other day when I was enjoying some GD 12, I tried to find it.  I just couldn't taste it.  GD 12 is right near, maybe at the top, of my favorites list.  Lucky for me in that it is a really reasonably price product.

It's believed to be a genetic disposition to tasting it or not. You either have it or you don't. I have it and it's extremely unpleasant to me. Some people taste the vitamin notes and are not bothered by it.

When a bottle is first opened, I get the vitamin taste, but it dissipates after a few pours, at least for me, and I end up really enjoying the bottle it after that.

Huh. I've not heard that one yet. I'll have to look for a bottle that's been open for a while and see if it tastes better to me.

Very unique tasting whiskey that I find myself grabbing for more than any other. Pretty straight foward but I have several times found something I didnt notice within the taste of this one so one can say is has some sort of complexity to it. This is one that is special and I havent found around here for under $30 until recently a store begain stocking it for $28. I hope they restock as ive bought the two that they had on the shelf. One day with any luck I hope to get some dickle 9 year in my possession.

OK, maybe it doesn't completely dissipate, but rather mellows into a more enjoyable flavor...at least for me. I'll admit that it has a very unique taste, and I don't like it as much when I first open a bottle, but after some air time, I enjoy Dickel a lot. I hadn't had any for several months until I decided to have a small pour the other night from my 3/4 full handle that's been sitting for a year or so...3 more small pours later I finally had to stop myself. [emoji6][emoji3][emoji106]
