Over that I like to put a splash of water in a low ball glass and keep in the freezer then when I want a pour I pour it over the thin film of ice that has frozen in the glass, interesting to taste the change as the ice begins to melt. Paddy Posted January 25, 2014 Share Posted January 25, 2014 I enjoy a lot of my pours over a very thin layer of crushed ice. The ice usually melts pretty quickly and slightly cools the bourbon. Guest Posted January 25, 2014 Share Posted January 25, 2014 Some women I know do a simmilar thing except they substitute the bottle of hooch for a tub of ice cream, the concept is constant.I reserve bottle drinking for special occasions with friends, usually involving an overtly masculine ritual such as cooking a whole animal over coals, hunting, fishing or talking about boobs. I use a big ice ball and once it has cooled the bourbon a little I will take the ball out. What I really like about the ice which surprises me is that it takes the strong alcohol vapors away. If it is summertime I will usually put it in the freezer for a while to get it good and cold. Then try with a little ice or Water.. I do this at first with most any Bourbon I have not already tried in the past.. However when i am really thirsty for a nice gulp.. I have Bourbon with Diet Coke.. Some may say no way.. I do not do it all the time.. But when the need for a nice big belt hits me.. That is what I have.. I use what I consider regular bourbons for this.. EWSB is a great everyday drink same for Weller Antique if i want a wheated bourbon.. Wile Turkey Rye goes good with a lot of things.. I generally use a glass too, unless one is not available... then drinking from the bottle or flask seems to be an effective way to keep from spilling whiskey on myself. Someone told me that was for tasting, not for "drinking" - but I don't ever gulp my bourbon, and typically every pour is enjoyed over 30+ minutes unless a micro pour for tasting purposes. Sometimes add water a few drops at a time (depending upon the dram, the proof, the time of day, my mood, etc.). Occasionally like a small cube or even two (again depending upon 'stuff': see above). I kinda like noting the change when the water adds layers to the flavor and aroma as the ice melts.... especially in the summer, out on the picnic table reading. The shape and surface area/volume ratio make them melt more slowly than smaller cubes.They slowly melt and the flavor of the bourbon changes as the proof slowly goes down. My fitness regimen is getting out of the La-Z-Boy and walking across the room to the cabinet. Usually, I bring the bottle back with me so as not to over exert.
