Over that I like to put a splash of water in a low ball glass and keep in the freezer then when I want a pour I pour it over the thin film of ice that has frozen in the glass, interesting to taste the change as the ice begins to melt.Thig, I just tried this with a hefty pour of OGD 114. At first, I stuck to these small tumbler glasses that HH gave us on a tour, that say Elijah Craig 18 years on them, and didnt want a glencairn. Then, at a second-hand store with my wife once while we were donating things, I saw a Willett glencairn that was still new and it was 50 cents, so I got it and gave it a try. I dont know why, but I prefer the glencairn now. I usually pour about a half ounce into it and enjoy something for a while, then a half ounce or so of something else, usually enjoying 2-3 different things a night that way.I do the exact same thing. 2-3.5 oz of something in my glencairn and sip for a couple minutes till its gone. Sometimes adding a few drops of water to see what it does.Occasionally an ice ball in a rocks glass. I've got a set of whiskey stones, but don't use them too often.I'll work in the occasional Old-Fashioned or Manhattan.If I'm just trying to quench a thirst, some bottom-shelf stuff in a cold glass of Simply Lemonade. dSculptor Posted January 28, 2014 Share Posted January 28, 2014 Always neat, sometimes with the uncut or bf's I'll add a few drops of water, about 1-1.5 oz. out of a glencairn, then rinse and start over again with something different.If I'm in for the long haul as in sculpting or going flatheading for the night, I'll do a large 16 oz.cup with about 2 oz. of lower shelf stuff,and fill the rest with water, that way I get my water intake at the same time, Whiskey flavored water! I have 3 different sizes of ice cubes, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 oz which I make with bottled water, and will vary the cube size based on profile, size of pour, and/or proof.In restaurants or bars I order neat with a side cup of ice. If I am drinking a higher proof bourbon then some ice or water is added after some time in my tasting glass to see if the overall profile changes.. I'll only use ice in a cocktail and keep everything else at room temp.I rotate between 3 different glass types: glencairn, wide-mouth glencairn, and a port glass. After that, I'll usually experiment until I figure out how I like that bourbon. I love variety in my beer and bourbon, so most nights the pours are small in a glencairn but from various bourbons. (Okay, could be the ADD thing kicking in as well!) Reading nights where I've got a nice book and some electronica going (I can seriously lose an entire evening if I've got Steve Verity's Tales from a Digital Planet on) I've got some highball glasses with a nice heavy base that belonged to my Grandfather. Perfect for some crushed ice (100 or so proofs) or an ice ball (higher proofs) and 2-3 oz. Might have to refill it once, depending. Barrel or higher proof (105+) pours I'll let air out for 10-15 minutes before tasting. It usually stays neat if it's 100 proof or under, but will usually move to a rocks glass for subsequent pours. After getting a feel for it, if I continue it is usually in a rocks glass with a big cube. I have found that prefer the cube...I think it is a room temperature thing for me, just not found of room temp drinks. I found it at a beverage wholesaler that sells to bar and grills that has a little retail outlet. I picked it up for $.50 as it was part of a case that was broken. It has a wide enough rim that you can nose the bourbon a little. Last night I had two pours of GTS with a little water to open it up. They were outstanding. Watched a really good episode of "Justified" that helped with the mood.
