SSBourbon1
I learned a great deal from everyone's posts on this cite as I have enjoyed Good Bourbon for many years. My father does a great deal of traveling and I have given him a list of Bourbons that are only exported to look for when he gets a chance. Well, he ofund one that wasn't on the list, but I think a very good find for me. Evan Williams 23 year. I have several "old" bourbons..Pappy family reserve, elija craig, Distiller's Masterpiece and have enjoyed them all. I was wondering if there was anyone out there that has tried this one. If so, what did you think? I can't wait for my dad to deliver this fine bottle to open it and would like others opinions prior to doing so. Thanks for your help. Paradox
Alls I can say is be prepared for some serious oak and barrel char notes. It is a good bourbon and a unique one at that because of the the fact that it is 23 years old, but like I said it lets you know that it has been in that barrel for 23 years haha. Please let us all know your own impresions after trying it! There is a pic of the bottle in question in the photo below...
SSBourbon1
It was rude of me not to thank you for your input on the EV23. Soooo...Thanks for letting me know a little about it. I had also emailed Heaven Hill and they had scanned a review of it along with some info on its export only status (to Japan, 200 cases per year). The review was from Jim Murray and basically stated what you had let me know about the character. Anyway, My dad decided that he wanted to deliverit personally and share in the first drink form this beautiful blue bottle (thanks for the pic from your vast collection, Mark). It'll be arriving tommorow and I may open it up then or the next day. I am going to take good notes on my first impressions and his (he's not the biggest bourbon fan but has liked the really top shelf ones in my collection). I am just trying to figure out if I should compare it to another old whiskey. I may put it next to Pappy 20 year on my second tasting for some comparison. ALSO, I have enjoyed very few good cigars in my life, my friends usually smoke Backwoods when we get together. Any good suggestions on a mild Cigar (even though I know there is a section on the board for this I have gone crazy writing and figured It couldn't hurt) I'll be near a good cigar shop tomorrow and any input would help since this in an area I have no skill with. Paradox
I can't really help in the way of cigar's unfrotauntely but as for putting it up against a bottle of Pappy 20... You'll definately be in for a surprise in well, everything! Don't forget Pappy is a wheated bourbon so there will be alot different about it. Let us know what you think and most of all, enjoy those pours wth your Dad!
SSBourbon1
I did find a cigar shop in a town nearby and they helped me out with a nice mild cigar "Romeo y Julieta" (my dad doesn't like strong ones and I don't smoke them enough to enjoy either) the guy at the store says "it was just like being in heaven"....we'll see.Since I have to get out on the road early today, didn't drink it last night rather did a quick taste of a surprise bourbon he brought with him. WL Well 19 year. Wow that was good. I have debated the fact that Pappy is going to be much sweeter and it I should have that for a contrast or if that would ruin the taste of both....may be just drink the EV 23 and be happy. It's supposed to be a nice night so (depending on how my day at work goes) might be cracking the bottle tonight but definitely by Friday.
