Bourbon with a Pickle Back

This reminds me of the time I was closing a bar down with my wife, a few folks at the bar and a friendly bartender. He was enjoyed whiskey but knew very little about it. At one point my wife mentioned we had just got back from KY and the Bourbon Trail and he started asking a lot of questions . . . yada yada yada . . . end of the night he looks at me and says he's buying everyone a last call and I was picking the bourbon. He had been talking about the Noah's Mill they just got in, so I played along and choose that, none the less he fills everyone a shot glass, we cheers and everyone chugs, except my wife and I, take a nice sip, look around, whoops, wrong kind of drink, look at each other, shrugged our shoulders and did the shot. Oh well, at least it was just Noah's Mill and at least I didn't have to drink pickle juice after it.

Pickle backs are fairly popular here in East Texas though the standard alcohol is vodka. It's viewed simply as a way to increase intoxication more quickly without any unwanted alcohol burn. Also, technically the electrolytes in the pickle juice could weaken the blow of a hangover. I don't think it would be bad with bourbon but I'd much rather enjoy mine neat in a Glencairn, slowly.

OK, did it. Not at all as funky as I expected. I see why this is a popular shooter. The pickle juice is to the whiskey, like a fire extinguisher is to a grease fire. Heat, flame, fire...Gone. I'm thinkin' this PJ chaser could douse a Stagg shooter fire. Has to be sone chemical reaction sort of thing. However, in all of this, there is a bit of a pleasing "something" left over on the finish. BTW, it was Jameson's 12yr and Claussen's pickle juice.

Yeah, I'd re-up for it...

Sounds interesting, I love a FILTHY martini so I can see this working, maybe by pairing it with a corned beef sandwich I can unleash the awesome power of the pickle.

I've done a pickle back with Jameson and liked it fine. Would be interested in doing this with a HW product as I often taste briny dill pickles in some of their ryes anyway.

I have a couple of neighbors that bust out Picklebacks with Jameson. I cannot stand pickles in any form, so I typically just opt for the Jameson. However, they love them.

I decided to try this last night. Both as bourbon shot followed by pickle shot and mixed 50-50. I was surprised that it wasn't so bad. Mixed you cannot even taste the bourbon.

My first memories of bars are the "what the hell" moment I had when I noticed that most all of them had very large jars of pickles and pickled eggs on them. I always thought that was the oddest thing. It wasn't just a bar, or two, but almost every bar of my youth in the south.

I never quite got it....until now.

Yikes! I should note that I have a number of Irish whiskies which I am officially declaring to be totally pickle free zones!

Sheesh, like you wouldn't WANT to taste it...

I did however pick up a lovely Knockeen Hills 120 proof poteen (the only poteen/poitin I can find in a store in town. Think Irish moonshine.) which you are welcome to pickle to your hearts content!

The bars I frequented around Clemson had jars of pickled mountain oysters...you got a free beer if you ate one...

My first try tonight seemed to line up with Joe's take - it completely wipes out the finish of the bourbon, but the aftertaste isn't like just shooting PJ - it is different (this is a guess on my part, I haven't tried this without the bourbon :lol:) I'm curious how the next sip of bourbon would be (I mean, is this an awesome palate cleanser or what?) Need to have that lined up for next time. Now I didn't shoot my bourbon though - I sipped it like I normally would, but immediately shot the PJ after finishing my last sip. Is that what y'all did, or was this like college days with one shot/two shot in a few seconds?

I mean, i do enjoy Dill Pickle chips as a snack while having a drink....but not sure i could chug the juice. At the very least i'd have nobody but myself to blame in the morning.

But the electrolytes in the pickle brine are GOOD for you. Actually may help w the hangover symptoms.

Years ago UGA football coach Jim Donnan (before he was organizing ponzi schemes) would have players drink pickle juice to avoid cramps.

Nolan Ryan used to soak the fingers on his pitching hand in pickle juice to speed the healing of, and also help prevent, blisters. An affliction that is a nightmare for a baseball pitcher.

The eagles under Andy Reid all drank it before opening day in 100 degree Dallas. They won and said it helped.

Ok, tried this today with OGD114 and enjoyed it more then with the Jamesons, I was still able to have some of the whiskey flavor, I am attributing this to the higher proof. Also tried a shot of half OGD114 and half pickle juice but did not care for this that much, prefer to do the whiskey with the pickle shot after.
