I have tried through various channels to pick up some Old Fitz BIB now that it is 86d and I came up snake eyes. While reading a ~y2k thread on here about it, I read that David Nicholson 1843 is the same juice but bonded at 7 years (and was SW juice at that time).

This got me searching for 1843, and I found a supplier online (the same supplier mentioned in the old thread that had SW juice). I orders a couple bottles of both (the site has reasonable shipping charges).

Anybody's thoughts on these?

Is it the BIB or the VSOF that is rumored to go? Saw plenty of BIB in KY today.

I have it on good authority (an email from HH to its local agent) that the BIB is DCed. More info:

Also, if the 1843 just turns out to be Old Fitz in different clothes, I guess that is a-ok with me.

Cheers

1) the DN is the same as the OF BIB. Both produced by HH.

2) DN is now NAS ( which means it is likely identical to the OFBIB)

3) DN stopped being SW years ago-presumably when the Van Winkles sold the label to Luxco.

If my memory has failed me feel free to correct any of this.

And it probably can't be repeated enough...just because the David Nicholson label says that it was distilled at DSP KY 16...unless a dusty going back to 1999 or so...IT ISN'T.

My understanding is the label was not sold by the Van Winkles or ever owned by them. It was contract distilled by them for Peter Hauptmann Co. http://www.flickr.com/photos/carlylehold/8290358963/

I do not know if David Sherman Corporation (formed in 1958) then took the label over from Hauptmann continuing the contract distilling at DSP-KY-16 or if United Distillers or Heaven Hill ever actually owned the label. I'm thinking the former as I've never heard of David Nicholson as one of the brands sold by Heaven Hill in 1993 to Luxco like Old Ezra or Yellowstone. Here's more on a 1955 dusty from our Sku http://recenteats.blogspot.com/2013/05/dusty-thursday-david-nicholson-1843.html

Thanks for the assist Thad. Got the HH contract wheaters confused. Luxco has the Rebel Yell/Reserve.

A few of us up here have made the mistake of getting DN BiB dspky16 and have it taste nothing like dspky 16 and was downright aweful. Still using using those old labels on bottles dated 2007. I fear for the guy ordering online that you will receive something you may not enjoy.

I have tried David Nicholson BIB fairly recently. The current stuff is from Heaven Hill. The label says DSP 16, but it is not correct. Either they are using up old labels from years ago, or never bothered to change when they printed more. In the past it had a 7 year age statement. The current label only has the number 7 (no years). It's BIB, so it must be at least 4 years old if no age is stated. I believe it's more or less the same as Old Fitz BIB. The last time I saw DN the price was around $15 a 750ml.

Ok guys, I just recently bought a bottle of the DN 1843 BIB,no where on the label is a 7, and it does say distilled by OF distillery DSP-KY-16, and bottled by DN distillery, DSP-MO-16. with the www. Luxco.com website. Am I missing something here? The bottle seems to be from 2013,How can they say that if it is not true, isn't that one of the conditions for BIB? Luxco isn't associated with HH.. is it? Even on the OF BIB from the same yr. it states distilled @ DSP -KY- 1,bottled @ DSP -KY -31.

As far as the taste I think it's pretty damn tasty myself, much better than the OF,is this a wheater? $15 for a 750.. Are we all on the same page here I wonder?

Not if you have read post 5 .

And Brett I rememeber even 6-7 years ago the Foremost on Argyle always had a bunch of these misleading label DNs. Those had 05 on the bottom of the anchor bottle. I remember thinking I had struck paydirt but wisely came back here to research first.

My bad,I guess #8 threw me off saying it was currently by HH, is it a wheater? 'cause I still enjoy the pour, thought it stood out from the ones by HH ..TWS, JTS, JW Dant, OF, although I think the JTS is close.

Happy to know the newer bottles are tasty. I ordered a few, lol. For some reason the search function didn't pop any of the 1843 threads, but could see them clearly at the bottom of this page after I started this thread. But this was after I had made my order ?

Haven't had DN myself but a friend recently had it and OFBIB within a short time of each other. She preferred the OF. I'm guessing that HH isn't selling off stuff they would want in their own bottles.

That's how i felt last winter out in the burbs when i found them... I'm trying to choke it down in some tradition bourbon sours, the egg whites make it tolerable.

My take on DN vs. Old Fitz goes something like this. DN tasted more like the Old Fitz from several years ago. It had a bit of that Listerine or eucalyptus thing going on somewhere in the profile. HH seems to have gotten away from that with the more recent Old Fitz.

I live in the greater St. Louis area, which is down home DN1843 country. Every liquor and grocery store you see has it for sale. The current juice is just OK, but there was a decided drop in quality about 6-8 years ago. Before that it really was one of the best values in bourbon, and I'm not particularly a wheater guy.

Years ago David Nicholson was a sleeper and a real value, a Stitzel-Weller product without the price tag.

Quite a nice pour. A pour I might add I was able to sample at a very generous SBers house. Just another example of the generosity I spoke of earlier.

Hey Mamba, Are you (or any other St. Louis folk) able to dig further and find out if the brand went directly from Peter Hauptmann & Company to David Sherman? A little internet sleuthing myself and came up with this dilapidated billboard for when it was still owned by Hauptmann. Also the grave for Peter Hauptmann too who unfortunately hasn't been around since 1904. Isn't the internet amazing .

  • 8 months later...

I just stumbled upon this one, and bought a bottle based on the DSP-KY-16 label alone. Obviously I'm bummed that it isn't actually S-W juice, but mainly I'm just curious how Luxco is getting away with this. How can they be legally using up old labels when, at least according to this thread, Luxco never owned the brand when it was S-W?

The label clearly states both DSP-KY-16 and Luxco.com - was that website even around when DN was still being made at S-W?
