Current Kentucky Spirit

Good day all,

Local is running a deal on KS this week. The bottles they have in stock are '12 & '13. Have read this has been degrading in quality since the pewter top era. Are they worth $40 plus tax currently?

They may be, depending on your palate. That's about $10 below retail. To some people the shelf offering seems thin, young and a little hot, others not so much. OTOH some barrel picks by retailers have been very good. It would be interesting to pick up one of the Kentucky Spirit and a Russles Reserve and compare them. That would give you and idea of your preferences.

At $40 I would probably pick it up. Around me it's $50 and not worth the money to me because of a plethora of other things I enjoy at a lower price. Just my 2 cents anyway.

Sailor, you've seen retailer picks of KS? I thought they had just now announced that they'd start doing that. I'm not aware of any in the past.

The only bottle I've ever had was from the last two years and I thought it was perfectly good, but not some revelation.

I think its worth a grab at that price. I usually go with the RB, but that price.............is nice.

I think the quality and age for that matter has been on a steady decline since the smooth dark/light top transition.I thought that the pewter tops of the late 90's and even some of the smooth dark tops of the early 00's were just fantastic whiskey,now well................ not so much.

Thanks for your replies, I appreciate it. I love RB but with this sale the KS is only a buck more. Looks like I'll have to pick one up.

Yup. The local boys here in Tallahassee (Market Square Liquors) have selected single barrels for the last three years. Well actually, last year they couldn't decide on two so the had WT dump them together so I guess that one qualified as a very, very, very small batch. The current one is a smokey delight although not in the same class as the '02 to '05 smooth dark tops bottles.
