I will heading to Kuala Lumpur and Koh Samui for 1 week soon. I don't expect to find much in Koh Samui, but just wondering if anyone has any tips for KL? I will only have one day for shopping around, or alternatively I could just wait until I fly back out and hope to pick something up at Duty Free. Any exclusives or deals to be found?

I had a weeks holiday there back in 06, and definitely didn't see much then. It may have changed somewhat though. Worst case scenario, Aussie Duty Free is a good chance to catch up on cheap Bookers, Woodford, Makers (90 proof, not 80) and several others. If you're lucky (and interested), you might luck into one of the Woodford Derby bottles like I did a couple of years ago. Same juice, but great commemorative bottle!

I should also add, that if you can get across to Singapore for a day trip, they have a number of whiskey specialty shops that stock Japan only type releases like Blantons straight from the Barrel and Four Roses Black Label & Platinum.

Here's a shop I plan on hitting up on my trip to visit the BIL in September:

Ah damn! Unfortunately I wont be able to make it as KL was just a stop off (Initially had to choose between KL and Singapore). Had I of known I would have went the Singa route!

With Aussie duty free, is getting it on the way back in ok? As far as i recall they had slightly less options than the departures duty free.

I have only been back through Brisbane in the last few years, and that it definitely true. Less, but not by much. It's far easier than trying to pack/carry stuff over and then back for sure, and, it allows you to still shop at your destination without exceeding your allowance.

agreed. I suppose if nothing Bourbon takes my fancy I could use it as an opportunity to stock up on Rum, Gin or Tequila!

Personally if I find nothing in my travels, I always go for 2 litres of Makers. I then have plenty on hand to use in cocktails and mixers, plus, it's the 90 proof version.

Been there. Really good store/bar with friendly staff. Got about six bottles including Blanton's Straight from the Barrel.
