justataste
Been mighty tempted about Rare Breed, but since it's about double what the WT101 costs thought maybe I could get some ideas about what I would be getting into....Any thoughts or experiences are appreciated. elmossle
It is by far the best in the WT line for the lower price tier in my opinion. While it might be a little more pricey, it is far more complex based on my taste preferences and something I reach for more often than not. I will say, I have experienced a wide price range for this as well which surprises me. I have seen it for as little as $30 at my usual store, all the way up to $46 at other stores around the country. If it was more in the mid $25 range, it is something I would think about making as a daily pour. I'm sure others here will disagree, but to me it isn't even a contest against 101 and something I really like a lot. Hope this helps.
squire
Rare Breed hands down for the reasons el just stated. Shop carefully though, I've also found the prices to vary quite a bit.
flahute
101 has recently become a favorite every day value pour for me. I tried Rare Breed for the first time 2 weeks ago and found it to be a much more flavorful bourbon. More complex and layered. Similar flavors but amped up in intensity. Definitely worth it to me. It immediately became one to have on hand at all times. As the others said, price varies quite a bit for some strange reason so shop around. I see it a lot in the mid to high $30's, but have purchased it in the high $20's and will always stock up when I see it at that price.

KyleCBreese
I wish I could find RB for that price. I haven't seen it below $40 in NJ.
MauiSon
I've bought a couple bottles at $34, but am balking at $38, especially since I stocked up on WT101 at $16. WT101 is good and Rare Breed is better, but not twice as good. Edited April 21, 2014 by MauiSon
Pudsky
It is in the low $40 range here in MN also. I bought one last night. Campfire in the neighborhood, so I brought the bottle over. Today when I was looking in the bunker, I found another bottle of Rare Breed. Hmmmm, completely forgot about that bottle. Maybe its time to keep a list with me so I can buy different bottles. Oh well, this bottle is good enough to have several in the bunker. I really, really like this one.
kcgumbohead
RB is one I always have on hand, I like the 101, love the RB its like a technicolor version of 101. The flavors in RB are much more vivid and layered, really good!!
justataste
Wow. thanks for a ll the replies. I usually see it for around $36 around here compared to $19 for the WT101. I'm going to give it a shot!
TunnelTiger
All this thread has done is make me want to pick a bottle of each tomorrow and do a sbs. Never had both on the bar at the same time.
justataste
Yes TunnelTiger..... That happens to me every time I read this site. I want to line up 4R Smb and SB and KC SB and WT101 and RB and Kentucky Spirit and Basil T Hayden and Bookers and BT and ECBP and have a really fun sbs comparison. ;-)But it won't happen any time soon. I can't even figure out what the heck SAOS is, and I've been seeing it mentioned from time to time.

SmoothAmbler
If it makes you feel better, me neither. We call is SAS OSB (or OSR for the rye and OSX for the ten). But I can get used to SAOS.
ramblinman
This thread made me pull the trigger today and pick up a bottle of rare breed. I'm not sure I've had it before. I haven't had a lot of WT, and honestly had a bit of a bias towards the brand without a lot to back it up.Have to say, I'm impressed and feeling like I short changed myself not picking up a bottle before now. Really nice buttery sweetness and even lingering finish on it. We'll see if the impression holds up over time, but it looks like this one has earned a spot in my permanent rotation. Thig
I didn't respond to this thread because I have not had WR101, but I have to say WTRB is one of my favorites. I could probably get by if I never had any other bourbon, thankfully I don't have to make that decision.Sent from my HTC6525LVW using Tapatalk

DrBob
Rare breed is on of my favorites and always at hand. It is just a richer fuller version of WT101, which is decent whiskey itself. I always have WTRB open on my bar, but don't usually stock WT101, since that's what I drink on airplanes, and bars when traveling. They also have a nice plastic 750ml of WT101 which I take backpacking
TLH-Mike
Curious, how does Rare Breed compare to Russell's Reserve 10? I had the RR10 not too long ago and thought it was meh, not worth the extra $ over the WT101....

boneuphtoner
Timely thread, as I recently bought a new bottle of RB to compare with WT101 and RR SB (which I just tried for the first time). The only other RB I had tried previously was a mini a couple of years ago, and while it was very good, I didn't think it was worth the difference in cost to the WT101. This newer RB at 112 proof seems much better than the WT101, and is nearly on par with the RR SB.
