Anybody seen Macallan Cask Strength on the shelf?

Hey guys,

Last year, my boss gave me a "surplus" bottle of The Macallan Cask Strength Scotch whisky. It was a gift to him from someone, and he found it not to his liking. I DEFINITELY found it to MY liking, but now it has been discontinued. Who'da thunk? Anyway, if you see it anywhere, I would REALLY appreciate a "heads-up". I'm in WA state, my Pop is in AZ, so those are obviously my first 2 choices, but I'll take what I can get.

Haven't had any in Chicago for some time now.

I've seen a few stragglers in the South Suburbs over the past few months but I would agree that they are basically gone. Unfortunate b/c it's great stuff

Bought my first last fall for $60.

Came across 4 on the shelf for $80 maybe 3 months ago.

I've seen 0.0 recently and, of course, am quite a goof for not buying everything I could when I could. I knew it was no longer made, but somehow my ego gets in the way and leads me to believe that I'm the only one who knows what it is. :(

Well, the good news is that there are plenty of other amazing (one might even argue better) cask strength sherried whiskies to drown your sorrows in. Aberlour A'bunadh and Glenfarclas 105, to start with.

I wouldn't put A'bunadh and "amazing" in the same sentence with Mac Cask but that's just me. Yes I've tasted them blind, back and forth, side by side, enough to know that not all "sherry bombs" are the same. Mac is quite a bit deeper and fills your noggin with more raw flavor, but A'bunadh is no slouch either.

Never had Glen 105.

Agree to disagree, I suppose. Personally, I find Macallan to be bland, if inoffensive. At any rate, there's always IBs of myriad other speysiders being sold at cask strength, so good luck . . .

The worst mushroom bomb I've ever had was a MacCS (no, I am not sensitive to sulphur) and the latest iteration was sweet and one-dimensional for me as well.

There are quite a few batches of A'bundah that are amazing...and some that are just decent. Never had an amazing Mac CS or tasted a "raw flavor" note from it. I don't even know what that is.

Picked up my second bottle recently in Georgetown, SC and finally opened it. It packs a spicy punch and needs ice to make it drinkable but oh what a drink. Very similar to a barrel proof rye.

I have heard that Macallan doesn't chill-filter their whiskies. Having had experience with the 12 I doubt that's true. Does anyone know whether the CS is chill- filtered or if caramel coloring is added?

Wow! That is a great price (at least $8 more in my neck of the wood). Isn't batch 47 the one that is hotly debated? IIRC some folks very much do not like it and others say it is fine. I have at least one 47 but haven't opened it yet.

Absolutely great price. It's $70-$80 where I live. I was considering putting away a bottle of batch 45, since I REALLY enjoyed that one. But then I found a bottle of batch 29 and went with that instead.

Macallan CS was available in my neck of the woods up until a few months ago. Now it appears to have gone the way of the dodo.

I have a batch 40 open now which I also paid $50 for. Really don't think it's worth any more than that. But it's also hard to pay double for a Mac Cask even though I do think its a superior pour on all accounts.

I know, real world problems, right!??

North of the border there is NONE remaining in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick.

I have noticed the NAS Mac CS varies batch to batch...some are more complex than others... not to worry about that any longer.
