I was talking to a guy from a local liquor store last night about...well bourbon, and one of the topics discussed was George T. Stagg and Stagg Jr. I mentioned that I didn't really like the Sagg Jr. When I said that, he replied that I would not like the George T. Stagg either. I have not opened my George T. Stagg yet.

I want to hear some of your opinions about the taste between the two.

Haven't tried either, although I have a 2013 Stagg in the bunker, but I can ay absolutely no one can tell you what you will or won't like. No how, no way.

Before going any further, we would really need to know what you don't like in the Stagg Jr. Hopefully, he asked you the same question, before making such a statement.

I was really asking what kind of differences there are between the Stagg Jr, and GTS.

He did not ask me what I did not like about the Stagg Jr. I am not saying that I will not like the GTS because that guy said I will. Actually Stagg Jr. is the first bourbon I did not like enough to not even drink it straight. I have made some Manhattans with it and its drinkable that way because the vermouth masks the very bitter taste I get from it. Heck, I may even try and mix it with some Sprite. That bottle is going to sit in my bar for when anyone who wants some can drink it.

Thats what I don't like about the Stagg Jr. To me its very bitter, and extremely harsh. Kinda the feeling I get when drinking Buffalo Trace White Dog. I usually like the very strong alcohol flavor, but not with this stuff. I really like barrel proof bourbons. Usually don't add any water, just like to sit with it for a while and sip it slow.

Heck if anyone who has not tried the Stagg Jr, and wants to, P.M. me and I will send you a sample. I have some 2 oz. Boston rounds that work great for samples.

Joe is right, need to know what you don't like about Jr. before making any definitive statements or giving meaningful advice.

That said, odds are you will like Sr. just fine so long as BT mashbill #1 is something you tend to like. Plenty of people who love Stagg don't care for Jr.. I like both, but prefer Sr. by a good margin. The family resemblance is there in both, it's just that the maturity of Sr. brings more depth and complexity and smooths out the rough edges of Jr. that are too off putting to some. If you are unsure about opening that bottle, go to a bar and try a 1oz. pour to keep it economical. If you don't like it, you have an unopened bottle that you will have no problem trading for something you like.

GTS is more balanced IMHO. For me it definitely doesn't drink it's proof. Jr on the other hand is hot and woody. I know, that's what she said. Anyway, I learned from a fellow member here to use Junior for making bananas foster. Cheers.

Now that sounds good!

Can you tell us what other barrel proof bourbons you like?

The harshness you don't care for in Stagg Jr is for me one of the characteristics that it inherited from the Sr. Doesn't mean you won't like GTS Sr, but it is a brash bourbon (which is what I like about it). I find that Bookers and ECBP to me are a bit more tamed (and I like both them them pretty well). I'd try to sample some GTS if you are worried you might not like it. And if that is the case, I think several members here would be happy to offer disposal services

The Barrel Proofs I have had, are Willett Family Reserve 10 year barrel #828, E.H. Taylor BP, Parkers 6th, Several different Four Roses, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, I also really enjoy the 2013 Handy I have.

Those are what I can remember off hand. The Stagg Jr. is much, much different than those.

E.H. Taylor BP is the same mashbill at both GTS and Stagg Jr., so at least you know it's not the mashbill you hate.

I'd have to go against the grain a little. I read reviews of jr and didn't get it right away. I finally found a good local deal and got a bottle. I absolutely love it. I have since purchased 2 cases. I have GTS from 2004 to present. My favorite year is 2009. Then 2011. I put jr right below those two. GTS is a bold drink as is jr. As I've found out the only way to know for sure is tasting.

Just to add the main thing I like about the jr is to me it's one if the sweetest bourbons I've had. I didn't get any if the bitter you describe. It's very similar to GTS just rougher around the edges.
