Hi folks,

I make cocktails often and sometimes they call for rye. My bottle of Rittenhouse recently went dry and rather than replace it I would rather substitute one of the many bourbons in my bunker. Just wondering if I could get a heads up from the SB intelligencia as to what bourbons you folks would consider closest to a rye. I ask because quite a few of my bottles are unopened and I don't want to pop a bunch just to find out. Sam Houston 10yr comes to mind, seem to remember it being quite rye like.

Sorry if it's a silly question but it would be helpful to me. Thanks for any input!

Old Grand Dad BIB neatly falls into that category. It's definably Bourbon in profile yet the rye shines through.

OGD makes a tasty Manhattan.

Of course, it'd be easier if we knew what's in that bunker...

As much as I like OGD 114 the BIB is my preference for cocktails or mixers, it just seems to have a better balance for that purpose.

Can't go wrong with all three. Sipping, mixing or just plain gulzzing.

Four Roses Single Barrel works for me - high-rye and 100 pf. Although I haven't tried it, OGD114 might be a good substitute.

As much as I like OGD 114 the (current) BIB is just not "right" to me. I don't know why, but I don't care for it. I'm a glutton for punishment. So, maybe I need to try it again as a mixer.

I recommend at least a 750 of the OGD BIB as the scientific method requires repeat experiments to prove the hypothesis.

OGD 114. Good for sippin' and mixin'.

Cosign. Very good choice that doesn't break the bank!

Yes, I believe it calls for a minimum of 3 tests/experiments to be considered valid. Off to the store...

Yes, three tests with each recipe sounds about right. Now where's my book on mixology.

I agree - so much so that I just took a bottle out of the stash in my car trunk. Don't know what I gonna do about the trunk stash when it gets warmer.

Seriously, thinking about the OGD 114, likely I'll adjust my 2:1=rye:vermouth to 1.75:1 & serve it rocks (big chunks) instead of up to account for the slightly higher alcohol.

Harry all kidding aside I think traditional cocktails were built around 100 proof whisky (standard of the time for the good stuff) and the 114 can be just a bit too much of a good thing.

Bulleit is my favorite value mixer. Butt nothing is better than Ritt! I just wish it was easier to find and as cheap as it was last year.

I really like a 1:1 blend of OGD 114 with Ritt BIB. I agree OGD BIB or 114 are pretty rye "forward." Interestingly, I find them to be more rye forward than Four Rose "B" mashbills which have a higher rye content.

Thanks for the suggestions. Been so damn busy at work never seemed to have time to post that. Dug a bottle of OGD BIB out of the bunker, already tried it and it's a credible rye substitute, also have a 4 Roses Single Barrel & an Old Forrester in there, and of course eventually I'll break down & buy a bottle of Rittenhouse.

That first summer, I discovered that when bourbon and rye is heated, it's really REALLY delicious. It opens up like you wouldn't believe.

That's one reason why I don't care for ice in my bourbon.

Yep exactly my thoughts too, I consider ice mixed with any spirit a cocktail.
