Little diversity in bourbon

I do run some bourbon tastings with different groups in my neighbourhood, and sometimes they come back and ask for more

I have one huge problem and that is a little selection. I do know the selection here is smaller than other places, but I figure this is the same problem all over the world, some places are just worse than others

I also do scotch tastings

I reckon I can do a scotch tastings every week and present new quality bottlings each and every week forever

I reckon if I do the same with bourbon I will run out of things to present in a month

Where is this neighborhood?

I've been nothing but swamped with choices since I started buying bourbon more aggressively about a year ago.

Now that I've learned about dusties and the variance of taste within brands as a result of production changes, it's kind of gone exponential.

I can't imagine running out of options for exploring bourbon. I've got too many to deal with, and have to be content with doing what I can.

Just to relate things, whiskybase just hit 50000 listwd bottlings. We had a discussion recently how many single cask scotch is bottled annually (mainly by IB) and the number was suggested to be more than 2000.

At tastings I like to present some bottlings that are a bit special so no Jack Daniels or Jim Beam White

With a name like macdeff, I'm going way out on the limb and say Luxemburg.

Or, to paraphrase, Lay on Macdeff and damned be he who first cries 'Hold, enough!'

I would hesitate to claim that my Scotch tastings are boring because of the limited options in Ohio. The irony is, even though the US is huge compared to "Luxemburg," there are unfortunate limitations based on local regulation and distributors' who do not "hold enough" variety. In Macdeff's case, he can only taste what is available to him. That's true of all of use, everywhere. Running out of tasting options in a month is not a function of how many bourbons are made but of how many are available in a given market. Some of us have been tasting for decades and have still not made it through our wish list of bourbons. Four Roses alone could keep you busy for quite a while--if you could get all the iterations.

At the end of the day, bourbon will always be more homogenous than Scotch. The regulations ensure that. Plus there are simply many more Scotch distilleries.
