Harry in WashDC
Yeah, but I wish I didn't. Whenever I walk in the door, I get offered the latest, greatest (usually) NDP off the top shelf even though I almost never buy them. Recently, I heard, "This one was aged at SEA!!" Sometimes, I get offered some special bottling from someplace behind the counter - in a hushed voice, of course. Never (well, except for a Willett Pot @$5 off last week - "You sure you want it? Nobody's been buying it.") are any of these offered at less than average retail price. But, he usually has mid-shelvers I like and started carrying EWB for me (my basic mixer for crowds). After I asked for them, he started carrying 375s of Dolins and M&R vermouth (dry, sweet, & bianco/blanc). I like to refrigerate my open vermouths and 375s fit better. Beer selection is better than average, and his wines are competitive. That's why I go back.
rndenks
This is ironic. Just a day or so I posted in this thread that living in a control state doesn't give me a lot of "options", and I make frequent use of friends in the KY area. Well, last night I met a friend that had to show me this store that "had the best selection in town". We visited it, and they did have several bottles I have not seen at other stores in my area. My buddy was looking for some Jefferson Rye, but they were out of it on the shelf. I asked the gentlemen working there if he had anymore in the back. He said he would check because they just had a truck come in that morning. So I asked if they got anything else in that wasn't on the shelves yet. Long story short...I walked out with a ETL Commemorative. We chatted the guy up a bit, and he gave us his card. He told us to call and email him if we ever looking for something. Especially some of the limited/seasonal stuff, he can let us know when it is in. The store is a good 30-40 min. drive from my house, but I will foster that relationship in the future. But I consider that worth it to keep the channel flowing. Also one man's trash is another man's treasure. I wasn't particularly interested in the Ocean but a friend of mine was super excited about it...so his birthday gift is now taken care of.

GaryT
He even snickers when Troyce and I come in. I wasn't sure how to respond to the OP, as I thought "Well, I kinda/sorta borrow Joe's bourbon guy from time to time" I'm just thrilled to get the opportunity to pick up that special bottle once in a while, thanks to Joe's coattails! jvd99
I've got a rock solid bourbon guy, established by consistently buying from him and sending in-laws and others his direction, participating in spirit tastings and a charity event he holds every year. It's to the point where I just e-mail my request to him and he e-mails back or calls when it comes in. This avoids having to buy things he thinks I want, but are not actally on my radar. Last year he came through with both FR LEs, full BTAC and Pappy line-up. This relationship was established with a lot of time, effort and dollars, but as I stated in another thread - it's bourbon zen not having to battle for special bottles. Today he called that the ETL Comm. finally arrived.
PaulO
I have a "Bourbon Guy"...And, he has me.You beat me to it. That's what I was thinking while reading earlier posts. I like to hunt lots of different places, and be surprised by what I find. Having said that, I sure don't turn down any tips from fellow SBers. Also, I'm willing to PM people if I can help out. For the most part I'm not too interested in most of the high price really limited release stuff. At this time, the only sort of high end stuff I'm on the hunt for is ECBP and ETL Commemorative. I believe I'll find them. I don't want them enough to overpay. There's plenty of good bourbon around.
