Saw this barrel at a local brewery and I thought it was an interesting artifact, so I'm sharing it.

So here's the brain teaser part. 1) What's "wrong" with this picture? 2) What's the explanation for the incongruity?

Long time members should get this pretty easily so let's let some newer folks take a stab at it first.

I'm assuming they only used DSP 354 shortly after the fire? And that by 05 it should read DSP 1? Someone get a little wild with the stencil, or are they buying in bulk?

DSP-KY-354 is Brown Forman, but DSP-KY-1 was up and running in '05 when this barrel was filled. I know that they had to increase capacity at Bernheim in order to distill Rittenhouse there; maybe that's true of some of their bourbon as well?

The incongruity is Heaven Hill is the implied maker when in fact it was Brown-Forman.

What brewery and what beer gets to use that barrel? Goose Island in Chicago uses Elijah Craig barrels for their Bourbon County Stout. I met the guys from Louisville's Against the Grain Brewery at my local bar on Saturday during Craft Beer Week, they use bourbon barrels to make their oh-so-lovely Debra Duz Helles, which is a German lager finished in Pappy barrels.

Yes, as most people said it's from the post fire period when Heaven Hill was buying whiskey from B-F & Beam and maybe others. Thus the incongruous DSP number.

I hadn't noticed the 05 on the barrel until after a couple people mentioned it. It is later than I would expect to see, but it just goes to show...something.

It was Kuhnhenn Brewery in Warren, Michigan. They didn't have any barrel aged beers on tap when I was there unfortunately.
