I had to check back in, since I finally sipped thru about half of this 1st bottle I have found WITHOUT the single barrel designation. I'll just be simple, and not get on BT's case, but it stills tastes almost exactly the same as the only other 2 bottles of ER10 I drank thru. Now I bought all 3 from the same store in the same month so there was probably little variation anyways. Either way, while I wasn't happy with them dropping the status, the juice is still just as good possibly more small batch will help versus single barrel, and has all the same qualities I always keep ER on hand for, a big vanilla bomb with just the perfect amount of oak and sweetness. Beyond that I'll have to spend some more time to get more into this bottle and how it changes during the gradual drinking of the 2nd half.

The one on the left in the bottom picture has 'Single Barrel' on the neck band. The one on the right does not.

Correct... Interesting

There's no regulation of the terms "small batch" or "single barrel" by the TTB. It's just not necessary because BT knows people will buy it without that advertisement on it. Just my $.02.

I doubt it will matter that much, in fact I think the 10 year age statement and upscale packaging matter more to most consumers.

A discussion about this subject elsewhere inspired me to blog about it today here. Clay Risen's interview with Mark Brown about this, referenced and linked in my blog post, is here.

I'm not concerned about dropping the Single Barrel designation.

I'd be less happy if it were no longer 10 year age-stated.

So my local LS has the new non labeled ER on the shelf, behind them are a few of the last labeled ones around where I live. Should I bunker a few of these or is it not a big concern. I like ER but I am still not clear if there is any real difference between the 2, yet.

Today I found two bottles of Eagle Rare with the older front paper label, did I need them no, but they have a new home now.

That was about the gist of my thoughts. Not going to go out of my way but I'll keep a few around just in case. Let's face it, by the time you finish 3 to 4 bottles and maybe a year has passed...well that bourbon isn't getting cheaper. Is it worth it to stock 4 bottles just to save a few bucks per bottle versus future potential (I say Inevitable) pricier ER bottles? Thats up to each of us. There is already enough of a run on whiskey it seems it can't be made worse by us enthusiasts.

  • 2 weeks later...

Haven't had a bottle of Eagle Rare open for a while, found a couple of the new label non single barrel for a cheap price.

I must say superb! On initial opening there was a little bitterness but now i am loving it.

Its good juice to me. For some reason it gets horrid reviews from so many focusing on the fad of cask strength releases, or they just dislike it. I don't get the dislike, I love the taste for a $25 daily sipper. Hits way above its pricepoint. Is it a stunner bourbon you should go apeshit for? Nope its tasry and usually available. So I drink it in phases every month.
