Yes I have to admit I pass on 80 and most 90 proofs.

Like someone said earlier I like 100 plus because I can adjust the proof with ice or water.

But some just don't take the water well.

With some water "opens" it up and some it just waters it down and that can be with the same whiskeys.

Who can forget the Makers saying they would lower the proof circus. Sure there are some ok 80 - 86 proof bourbons. I feel like they are the minority. On the other hand, most of the cheap swill is bottled at 80.

I wont typically go below 90 proof, but there are some exceptions particular with dusties. My main issue with bourbon at 80 or 86 proof it a watery mouthfeel, not necessarily lack of flavor. I almost never buy EWSB because it tends to taste watered down to me... even more so that EW Black for some reason. However, I happily stock up on AAA 10 year, so it just depends.

Very few under 90 proof hit me right. Dusties are an exception, and there are several Scotches I enjoy under 90. But if there is a new product, I'm far more likely to go out on a limb if it is higher proof.

I also gravitate towards higher proof selections, however in the last three double blind tastings my friend and I have down, standard BT has come out on top...for what it's worth.

happened to me today again, i had $20 burning a hole in my pocket and they had old overholt rye for $14.99 but damn thing was only 80 proof..said forget it..for a rye i dont know why i just would think it would be atleast 90..but what do i know lol

I'm with you. I won't hesitate to grab a dusty 80-proofer as I've had several that were remarkably flavorful. The new stuff, not so much.

Agreed, the 80/86 proof dusties are almost always enjoyable. I also have found some reasonably dusty Dickels (dirty mind!), 2008?? at 80 proof. Really nice. For me, the lower proof pours are a different experience. Smoother, more "balanced" (another dirty word here sometimes), but sometimes just the thing. I don't always want to be bowled over or challenged by the pour. I can drink it, somewhat distracted, and not feel guilty.

ND Old Taylor was my favorite bourbon back in the day. I wish I could go back in time 25 or even 30 years and buy a few cases.

I find myself enjoying the higher proofed and preferrably unfiltered barrel proofs the most so far. although I've yet to purchase any Beam bourbons, such as Bookers.

I have become wary of all things 80proof and also under 100. 100proof and/or BIB is honestly for me really well suited to my palate.

BIB is definitely a heavy purchase influence on me, I just have a soft spot for them.

BIBs are almost always a safe bet. Bookers is a good barrel proofer, give it a shot sometime.
