Guy Debord
Hi Gang,I tried searching this on SB and elsewhere, but had no luck (apologies in advance).I was in one of my locals yesterday keeping tabs on product and I noticed that the store had 6 Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserves with a private barrel selection plate that indicated no store selection. This is odd to me because I have seen bottles without selection plates and the bottles with them usually list the store. We've all seen these they read "Selected and Bottled By Fred Noe" and then it says "Binny's" or "Mariano's" etc. What's the deal with Private Barrel Selection Plates without a selector's name? Are these still private barrel selections? How rare are these and who was it selected by then?Maybe it was selected by someone and then unclaimed and my neighborhood store just lucked out? Maybe what's inside the bottle sucks and the proprietor decided to go with another barrel? Many Thanks,
amg
I know some small stores go in on a co-op together to do private barrel selections. Maybe they don't want to emphasize that fact?
Josh
I don't have any answers except to say that's weird.
kjbeggs
I have a bottle of Single Barrel with a plate that just says: "Made in Kentucky. Hand-picked by Texans for Texas."
Josh
I have a bottle of Single Barrel with a plate that just says: "Made in Kentucky. Hand-picked by Texans for Texas."That sounds like a PAC. "Paid for by Texans for Texas and not authorized by any candidate or candidate's committee." Edited June 5, 2014 by Josh
adub23
From what I was told by a friend who works at a local store, Jim Beam brands offers "barrel select" options on every one of there labels but the store doesn't actually select anything. They just get the name plates to put on the regular bottles of booze if they agree to purchase a "barrels" worth of that label from them. They also get a kickback of some sorts to sign up for this. squire
Every barrel that is dumped every day is hand selected so big whoop.
Guy Debord
adub23-That could be it. I was puzzled because the store is not very savvy. They carry a decent selection of the staples, odd ball lower shelf, and a great supply of Dickel, BT, and OGDBiB for some reason. Maybe they know more than I think or folks in my neighborhood have asked them to order things. They don't strike me as a store who cares about products just profit. I did score a dust covered EWSB 2000 in there back in August. Who knows. Thanks!
Paddy
Guy, you should have someone etch your name in there. Hand picked by Guy Debord for Guy Debord has a nice ring to it.
Quantum
Guy, you should have someone etch your name in there. Hand picked by Guy Debord for Guy Debord has a nice ring to it.To preserve the accuracy of the label, I would go with "Hand picked by _______ for Quantum"
Guy Debord
The owner is a very nice man from Mumbai, I wonder if he would mind my bringing some etching tools Sounds good! As an aside, I know we talk about prices here a lot and I have to say that I am willing to pay a few dollars over on my whiskey and beer for some of these smaller neighborhood shops. I will gladly pay a tad more from the store in question just to support those guys. They can't compete with the big stores. Binny's et. al. get good prices because they can buy large quantities. They have the storage and the shelving units. Just thought I'd mention it. Plus is some of these wacky stores, you can find gems!
amg
It's funny that you mention that because the small neighborhood shops I go into usually have better prices than the chains around here. Makes it easy!
adub23
Every barrel that is dumped every day is hand selected so big whoop.I don't disagree squire. Some stores that have these bottles probably have no business picking barrels on there own anyway - leave it to the "experts", right?!? Just a little shady to advertise the bottle like the actual store had anything to do with the selection process of the actual stuff inside the bottle.Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
flahute
It's funny that you mention that because the small neighborhood shops I go into usually have better prices than the chains around here. Makes it easy! It's the opposite here. The small stores, of which there aren't many, are all marked up compared to the big chains. That, combined with our ridiculously high liquor taxes, makes supporting the little guys really hard.
TunnelTiger
Every barrel that is dumped every day is hand selected so big whoop. As usual Squire nails it again. It's all about the label, that's why they call it marketing.
Guy Debord
It is hard to support your local small store because they tend to be higher because they don't have that inventory/ordering capacity. As was mentioned though there are anomalies where small stores have really cheap prices on some things and high on others for example, Eagle Rare is $42 and then Rittenhouse will be $19 when Binny's does Eagle for $30 and Ritt for $25. Strange.I also agree on who has the expertise to select barrels. The Binny's Selects are amazing, don't think I would trust many other places.
