Just finished off a bottle of Bakers. It wasn't great, it wasn't bad, just meh. Doubt I'll buy another anytime soon.

Wha? Wait a minute. Is the bottle you recently bought based on squire's recommendation? I guess drinking it quickly is a good strategy for less favored bourbon.

Dipped back into the GBS OESO which I cut to my preferred 100 proof when I first tasted out of the bottle and revisited again today at both 100 and barrel proof, well whaddayaknow I guess I am in certain instances a barrel proof drinker after all. The "buttery" characteristic I associate with OESO and remembered from selection day was absent in the at home 100p pour. Now its returned in spades just like my GS OESO drinks at 100p ( don't know why that is). Going forward this bottle will be enjoyed sans water at its native proof which is quite drinkable. In fact all the flavors are quite harmonious and I am lovin this pour at barrel strength, always something to learn and enjoy.

That is the interesting thing about FR Barrel Selects. Since they are not usually a smokin' hot proof, sometimes they are great at barrel strength, yet other times they are great with a little water or ice.

Succumbing to the power of suggestion once again, I'm drinking Baker's based on the recent discussion. Definitely taste the Beam profile that I pick up in Booker's and KCSB. Wasn't sure about it at first, but it's improving nicely after some time in the glass. Very solid start for sure.

Really enjoying some Rhetoric tonight. I saw a few on the shelves and I am thinking I will need to pick up another one.

Power outage after a big storm blew through, so I'm enjoying some Binny's OESO (in a 1792 glass) by candlelight. u3y3u6as.jpg

A blend night. Started out with a blend of BT/Stagg Jr. (5:4). Seems like an odd ratio but I blended 10 ounces with 8 ounces and, other than the initial pour, will let it sit for a week or two before drinking.

Followed up with SB Blend (traditional 50/50).

Now, I cheated and switched off to a pour of OWA, which is actually tasting pretty good. This bottle of OWA is actually pretty decent compared to recent bottles, especially with a small cube of ice or touch of water.

Now moving on to WTRB - oh how I love this one. Incredible value.

No bourbon, malt. No peat, either. Just good ole fashioned barley, young, spirited and delish.

Westland out of Seattle. It's a tad overpriced but man it's really well done.

Well shoot. You're going to make me go down and visit them at the distillery now aren't you?

I just don't want to stop drinking this Eagle River FR OBSQ. Started off with some Rhetoric (which has opened up nicely), then the outstanding Eagle River OBSV and capped the night off with the OBSQ. Definitely my favorite whiskey of the year so far.

I'm right there with you Gary...but on the V side of things I had everyone try my first bottle,it lasted exactly one week.

Those Eagle River bottles are great. The nose on the Q is a stunner. The V is just all around great. Definitely in the running for best stuff I've had in 2014.

I'd hope so. I need a mule! :)

If you've ever had Stranahan's, you'll really appreciate the trip. From what I've seen online, it looks like the have a great operation.

Hot as blazes yesterday afternoon until a Canadian cold front swept in and washed away the humidity. We decided to enjoy the cool evening temps with a few nice pours of OGD114. Heavenly!

Josh, I can hear Barry White in the background from here...:D. Hope it worked out for you, but I'm guessing Liz figured out what you were up to...;)

It's an interesting operation but quite small. The affiliated bar next door was about as big as the distillery. There barrels are all kept in a temperature controlled area which surprised me.

The bottles I have tried in the past were all slightly older bottles, not real early batches but ones that were distilled just before the sale to Proximo in 2010 I believe. I have a newer post sale bottle but I haven't opened it yet.

Started out with a nice pour of Knob Creek. Moved on to 4R Small Batch. Hard to decide which one I like better, but both are in my top 10 regular pours.

EWSB, '03. Superb. Classic bourbon notes, but I find it to be extremely delicate and nuanced. I've blinded this next to '04 many times, and greatly prefer the '03 profile. Maybe I got a particularly honey barrel, but man this is good whiskey. There is still great valued bourbon out there.
