Has anyone spent time looking at other bourbon supposed forums or subs online? Excluding BE, theyre ok. I spent a week on reddit and its all talk of mixing soda with your bourbon and realized it is the exact young dbags who thrive on going to a bar and paying ten bucks for a soda and bourbon and that top shelf bourbon is badass when they mix it. I dont care how you drink but don't complain about differentiating oaked versus overoaked or too sweet or too much corn flavor in a bourbon brand when you're drinking with coke or pepsi. Glad at least I can read a forum without the idiots. My hats off to the more straight bourbon crowd here.

there are few other bourbon-dedicated sites, and none as good as this one. None are perfect (including this one), but this site is very active, diverse, and knowledgeable, with a good dose of humor, and many people willing to help others learn and acquire.

It sounds like to me you're not really interesting in finding new communities.

I was active on BE for a while and I was a member of another site briefly. IMO, SB.com is the best. BE has some good historical resources via Mike, but none of the others do much for me.

Twitter has a good convo every once in a while and the Detroit area American Whiskey group on FB is good too.

This the number one site hands down. It's also the best site that I visit compared to my other hobbies of college football and motorcycles.

The interaction, advise, sharing, etc just can't be beat.

The fact that we have great mods is a super plus as well.

Not to blow 'our own' horn; but, the SB folks and the mods who make the site what it is...

are easily the most knowledgeable and good-natured, not to mention the most unapologetically bullshit averse

of any site I've ever visited. Not that I visit many more than once.

A vast wealth of experience, a dash of humor, a common willingness to help others enjoy our hobby (passion?)...

What more can you ask?

I'm a member of the Bourbon Info Exchange group on Facebook, but rarely post anything there. Occasionally good info and discussions, enough to keep me checking out posts, but in general they're not as knowledgeable as this bunch, and far more of a flippers mentality prevails, which I don't like.

I have an IE Faves folder called "whisky whiskey" that holds my brown spirit links - blogs/sites by sku, Chuck, Josh, Fred, Coopered, WAdvocate, TTB, Lehrman BevLaw, and a few others (David de, some sales/reviewer sites like K&L, etc.) are there along with some links to some mfr's sites (MGP & SA for example), and a tab for "stores" so I can check prices and availability. I have a separate folder for "other spirits" with theginisin blog listed first. It's a real short list.

I usually visit the bourbon ones daily just to see what's what before I log on to SB and also sometimes visit WA, TTB, etc., when something occurs to me (like, my hardcopy of WA is someplace else & I can't remember specifically what an article said - BTW the recent "rye" issue is a keeper).

My list of bourbon blogs used to be longer. Fifty years of trial and error drinking has led me to conclude that I really don't need to spend lots of time elsewhere when I (a) see a new bottle of something, (B) have shelf space to fill, © feel duty-bound to help the economy recover by spending my booty. You all are all I need. And unlike my local purveyors and bartenders, you don't need to sell me anything or need to keep me happy so I know some of you will tell me the truth.

A free drink would be nice.

There is no doubt that SB is the leading internet source for all things bourbon. I follow few blogs, but Sipology and whiskeyapostle are 2 that I visit on a regular basis. I only drop in on BE once a month, or so. Unfortunately, the last couple of times that I've visited I failed to see any posts from the member "Mike" from Conyers, GA. I don't think he is a contributor here, as I think I would recognize his style. I always seek out his posts, as I found them thought provoking, in depth, full of information, and just totally entertaining. He is a very good resource on that sight. Anybody know if he is still around?

He left the site, he threw up his hands with frustration at the site, just as LJ there did last year over site issues. The two best guys left the site, and its like a ghost town there anymore

I just joined BE this week actually, haven't posted yet, but I noticed it gets very little activity.

I also signed up for FB just because I had heard about the bourbon groups. I've been in those for 4-5 months or so but have yet to read anything there I haven't read here first. Lots of rookies, which is understandable and not a bad thing, but you can only read so many "How much is Stagg Jr retail?" posts before it becomes exhausting. But I've withheld from all the other FB shenanigans, I'm not even there under my real name. I don't want people to find me to pull me into that racket.

agreed. a friend told me today, when I went to his b-day party, that I need to be a facebook member, as he had to invite me separately as Im not a FB member. I have no interest. I dont want to be tracked/found/looked up/stalked/liked/taken out of context.....people often lose their social rules when they spend so much time on there, I even saw people get kicked out of nursing school over stuff they put on there, thinking it was 'private'. no thanks.

That's too bad about Mike. That site has lost an asset if he doesn't go back. What kind of "frustration" did he have?

I actually searched all over before joining here...the best I found were a few threads on unrelated message boards dedicated to bourbon. SB has everything from rookies (which are vital to a good discussion) to widely recognized experts in bourbon tasting, writing, and history...and everything in between. That's a really, really tough combination to beat.

I believe he got fed up with noobs and some attitudes present on the site. I believe LJ got fed up with a lack of spam control on the site.....at least, thats the gist of what they said before they left.

Hey! We have very little of those issues, here. Maybe, I'll have to drive out to Conyers to deliver a personal invitation to join us! :D

I'm just grateful I found a great resource of like minded bourbon guys to learn from. I just figured I found so many great directional leads on what to buy, what to try and what deserves my hard earned money here there would be other forums to branch out and learn what they see as great bourbons. Thats not the case, the atmosphere here is best for bourbon fans. My break time reading keeps me entertained here.

I vote you do this. Good luck tracking him down. Look for the guy sharing bourbon with his dog, I guess.
