GaryT
I do like the city, or at least some description as to where. I completely understand folks not wanting to post their real names - those that do often include it in their signature (unless they were the first "Joe" or "Tony", not to pick on them!) But if I'm "DarthVader1993" and don't have a picture of myself . . . why not share my location? And I think there should be a petition to get Squire to create an avatar. Just saying
garbanzobean
As one of the newest posters on the forums, I am totally against posting anything with a point.Seriously though, I do enjoy having new posters come through. It's nice to see the interest in bourbon get bigger.

tanstaafl2
Im just making a point. How many people are actually reading the intros.Likely that a good deal more read them than may respond to them. I admit to being guilty of that.

wadewood
even better - show at at a Bardstown event of get together with your local sb.com members and post a picture. Unless I meet you in person, many posts are pointless for me.
Hawg73
Using someone's real name seems more friendly, polite (Squire is my real name) but I'll call you whatever you like. As for relationships I've outlived most of my friends so am not interested in seeing them anytime soon. I used to go into chat a while back and it was hopping and everyone was using real names. I think using real names is a great way to get to know each other better. Mine is Gary.
Harry in WashDC
That's what I need, an avatar, but then I'd have to learn how to post one.Old fahts should be exempt from avatars since we don't even own the movie, never having figured out how to "play" a dvd. Besides, some of us put our location in our user names. Like, Squire is obviously from the United Kingdom - I'm guessing Essex. And I'm obviously from Virginia or Maryland (because everybody in the greater WDC area says they are from WDC).:bs:[This'll have to do - couldn't find a smartass smiley; some of really ARE from WDC].On a more serious note, the whole point of "community" is to have some common points of reference or at least some modicum (big word meaning, I think, "level" or "amount") of skin in the game. Last I looked, most of you all are not just strangers on a street whom we are asking for directions.
Harry in WashDC
Im just making a point. How many people are actually reading the intros. Before I signed up, I read dozens and then followed the posters for awhile to get a sense of what was expected of newbies and what the regular posters were like. Since signing up, I've read EVERY newbie sign-in and have responded to most (think I missed maybe five or six in 4 months). The ones I didn't post to was usually because I was late to the party. That said, I felt, like you, much more welcome when people actually posted on my intro post. If I didn't post on yours, I'm sorry. My wife of 40 years is from Brookfield, and I should have stepped up.Oh, poop. You signed up yesterday. I saw your post last night & responded but got timed out about the time the Nats-Brewers went into extra innings and I forgot to log back on and "retype and resend". VT Mike
I am not sure I ever introduced myself. I think I had been lurking so long that I didn't think about it by the time I started posting. Now I feel like a jackass.Yep, I did the same thing. I hope I didn't confuse anyone when I changed my avatar recently - I had so much more respect for Pappy when I put his picture up there however many years ago it was. I know what it's like on the forums, can't post on every thread but with such an emphasis on an intro, one would think more posts especially the ones local. Anyways when I throw a GTG, maybe more will be excited for another cool member who helps others as I have been welcome and play it forward. I'm a big fan of respect, and more than anything, networking, never know who's on the other end and how they play in this thing called life. I think the emphasis on intros is to give the new person a chance to introduce themselves, more than for all the existing members to reply and say hi. GaryT
Country, if you posted a pic of yourself as your avatar when you first joined us, you'd have to change it, as folks who meet you now wouldn't believe you're you. Congrats again, my friend.:toast:
petrel800
...if you don't give us a general idea of where you are located. So, when you say you saw "x" for "y" amount, or ask "why can't I find such and such" without showing where you are located...your post is pretty meaningless. Most of the new guys are guilty of this. You don't have to provide your city (or at least state) but it makes it hard for others to provide you with useful and/or accurate responses. silverfish
Another request would be if we could have an option to show real name, I know some other boards offer this. You could always include your real name in your signature line as some members do. Restaurant man
Im just making a point. How many people are actually reading the intros. As someone that read and welcomed you on your post, I think most people these days like to feel you out a bit and get to know you on this forum. Some guys (not saying you) just come by to take with no give. It gets tiresome. Luckily they unusually show themselves in the first 20 posts and then poof!! They are gone. Evets
Some very good responses here!Besides the particular points discussed here the general subject actually implies quite a few important issues that seem very debatable on other Fora. I participate on quite a few Fora for my many interests and I see a wide range of behavior from the most civil and polite to downright mean input and people who are obviously trolling to get people worked up. On many Fora the "Intro" area is hardly noticed and few members take the time to welcome others. On some sites that area is a welcoming and highly participated place. I do prefer to know where someone is located. I am less particular about names...if you are "Boo-dog" or "XV37aaBrr" or "Michael Valdez" I don't really mind. I do tend to focus on avatars since they help me keep people straight. I am much more interested in civility and appropriateness and especially, content. What bugs me is the extensive use of abbreviation but I deal with it (I don't recall if it was here or on another whiskey Forum but I was made to feel under-informed when I called attention to that issue). My personal feeling is that if I post I want my posts to be interesting and I don't want the other members to have to work hard to follow me.I very much appreciate the wide-ranging opinions here; we have a great Forum. Thanks to all!
