Hi guys I finally decided to register after lurking awhile. got to say although I have already learned alot I was still a bit lost in Sams liquer today, but ended up with a bottle of wild turkey 101 proof and a bottle of knob creek small batch.

I poured some WT with supper and enjoyed it very much but am still debating on wether to try the KC tonight or work on the WT for awhile to get to know it then compare the KC.

did I do ok for my first bourbon purchase? I have been buying Jack Daniels and Lord Calvert for some time but thought it was time to try something new and maybe a little more enjoyable.

Yes, you did just fine. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed your Wild Turkey - I love it, myself. There is a whole world of great bourbon just waiting for you to taste it.

Both were good purchases. I like the WT better but KC is good too in it's own way.

Welcome, noobe! Glad to have you. Most of us started on exactly what you bought - WT and KC. Many of us still love those two, though you might find some polar opinions on KC.

Just take things at your own pace. No sense going broke yet. If you have access to Sam's, you are very lucky. I'd suggest sticking to the less expensive brands we like here until you get a taste for what you like.

If Sam's has AAA 10 y/o, they've been holding out on me. I figure I'll have to wait until I can send an emissary to Kentucky to get a bottle of that one.

I would add to your list Buffalo Trace, which is on sale at Sam's through 10/31 for $15.21, IIRC.

I'm curious about this comment: what exactly is there about EC12 that people have to learn to like!? The reason I ask is when I finally tried it, it was an instant love affair! Granted, I was a well-seasoned bourbon lover by that point, but I'm really curious about what would turn somebody off!? Is it the woodiness, or the more take-no-prisoners style?

While I now love EC 12 (and always liked it), I originally described it as "firey". So, I would guess it is its "take no prisoners" style.

for me it was not what I expected at first. The price point is so good you do not expect the complex flavor rush. It is too much too fast when you don't see it coming. After a few drinks you know you have the best value out there and are in love.

The first time I tried it I took it to a party to mix with coke.

The next bottle got a little more respect.

What a great start you did make. While I am not always thrilled with Knob Creek, it is no slouch of a bourbon at all, and Wild Turkey 101 is GREAT, a superlative example of what I think bourbon should taste like. If you like either of these, a love of bourbon will surely be yours.

So now I ask, is your screen name furby? like the weird fuzzy toys??

thanks for the welcome everyone. after trying KC again yesterday afternoon I am not sure if I like it or not the first glass sunday at noon was good but the next that night seemed different somehow. I am back to a two finger pour of the WT101 neat tonight and it tastes scrumpdilyishus if that is a proper way to describe a bourbon.

my screenname was given to me before algore invented the internet so it was more of a nickname, I got it back when I was single and living in a house with some friends who gave me the nickname one of the many nights we indulged in a keg or two of barley pop. I never could figure out where they got it from but it stuck.

My list was not based on what Sam's has. My Sam's comment was unrelated to the list.

For me, it was very complex and had a slight medicinal taste. But, as my palate matured, I was able to decipher the complexity of the EC 12 and it now bursts with flavor.

It's funny, because when I finally tried EC12, I thought to myself "I wish I had tasted this years ago", but after reading about different people's initial turn-offs, maybe it's a good thing I waited!

At this point it's hard for me to identify with NOT liking it...because it was an instant hit.
