dSculptor
Hey Guys, For the fortunate ones that have some Pappy on hand, I was just curious how often do you visit them? Do you hold out for only “special occasions†, or just whenever you feel like it?I have all of them except for the 15, and I like to pour from them not so much on a regular basis, but when I’m in the mood kind of thing. I definitely don’t need a special occasion to pour them. Just recently poured me some 23 last Wednesday,(wow it was nice to revisit that one it sure did open up more from the previous pour) and again on Sat. I gave my uncle who came up from FL. for my nephews wedding a pour, he absolutely loved it, didn’t slam it, but also didn’t waste any time drinking it. I suppose I will start to moderate these pours more now that my 20 is about half and my 23 is slightly above that, but then again..maybe not. joboyd
I visit my Pappy as often as I can. He's 90 now...not gonna be around forever. The nursing home is nice, too.
nd2005
I only keep one open at a time, and sample it sparingly. It took me ~2 yrs to go through the first bottle I had; second bottle is now around the top of the label.I do take one pour to celebrate every Notre Dame win during football season. Which might explain why it takes me so long to get through a bottle...
SWC
· Hidden Hidden I waited two years for mine. Opened it up, had a few glens of it and got bored. Haven’t touched it since. Link to comment
Tony Santana
I have a Pappy 15 and 20, plus ORVW and Lot B. The fill levels are not going down quickly, but that could be said of a lot of my bottles, as I have a lot of open ones. I won't necessarily save them only for special occasions and will sometimes pour a glass when the mood strikes. Probably not much different than how I approach BTAC or a 4R LE. bourbonfoot
I have ORVW, Lot B and a 15 open. I have an extra 15 as well. I think that I tend to visit the 12 year the most because it's seemingly the easiest to get around here annually. Also I typically drink them on weeknights when I know I'll only be having one drink mostly.
Richnimrod
The only 'Pappy' I have left is about a half-bottle of my 15-yr. and about 5-oz. of the 23-yr.The 20-yr? All Gone. (I don't count the Lot B.)I poured each of 'em 'when I really hit a mood'; and for special occasions, such as when a friend who would really appreciate it was over, or when my son comes up from Georgia. So, modified version of 'special occasions', I guess.
qman22
I will pretty much pour them when I feel like it, but that isn't that often... If I had to guess it's probably a couple times a month.
RWBadley
Had some this AM with my lady who is celebrating her birthday. The Pappy 15yo from SW. Also a little snort of Mt Vernon Rye bonded 1936/41. With a breakfast of Spam, eggs, taters and carrots. She deserves the best. I give it to her as often as I can
dcbt
On average a bottle will last me about 18-24 months. So I guess that averages to a pour every 4-6 weeks or so, but in reality they are usually clumped around holidays or visitors or special occasions. camduncan
Of the bottles I have open, I had a pour of 10/107 a couple of months ago (I still don't care for it), haven't touched my Lot B in probably 18 months, haven't touched my SB Pappy 23 in 12 months and don't remember when I last had a pour of the Family Reserve Rye. I've got a backup bottle of the Rye, and an unopened bottle of Pappy 15 bunkered. My problem is that I know it's highly unlikely I'll ever replace them (nor do I particularly want to at todays crazy prices), so they tend to fall of my 'go-to' radar. Kyjd75
I have some Pappy, various bottles of different ages. I only open them for special occasions, primarily because I enjoy sharing them with good friends, and also because once a bottle is opened, it doesn't last long. It is impossible for me to "nurse" a bottle of Pappy, thus I look at them more often than open them. I also use them as very special gifts for certain special occasions. kjbeggs
The 20YO I got last release is still about 2/3 full. I have only been into it 3 or 4 times. Now that we are getting closer to Fall, I'll probably pick up the pace a bit, hoping to find at least another this year.I've got an ORVW and a Lot B that are not yet opened, but likely will be once football season gets started. Tony
I currently only have a 15 open which means I should go open another one. I really do not have any special occasion or anything like that. Just a nice day outside and a good cigar is all I really need to get motivated.Best regards, Tony
GaryT
I bought my only bottle of Pappy (20 yr) for my graduation from college, and sat on it for 6-7 months waiting for that occasion. After opening it, I didn't go to it very often - but mainly because it was ruined for me by all the hype. I honestly preferred every WLW I've ever tasted over it. Ultimately I saved a few ounces so I can try it again in a few years (tastes change, right?), and recently brought a couple of those to Michigan so my Dad and I could taste a PVW vertical. The bulk of my bottle was shared at the Sampler in 2013, as I knew folks there would enjoy and appreciate it more than I was. Now my last few ounces of WLW from my only remaining bottle - not necessarily special occasions, but definitely only when I have the time to treasure and savor the moment. BonVivant84
I will bust it out for special occasions and for curious friends. I'm actually going to take a fresh bottle of 10 year on a trip with my uncles and cousins next weekend which I assume will be finished quickly. I also have one odd and recurring special event that I take it out for and that's when it floods. I unfortunately live where we have a combined sewage system, so when there is heavy prolonged rain storms the drain in front of our condo in our trash basin backs up and spews forth some really nasty stuff. In response to this ongoing stressful situation I put on my wellies, rain coat and fill up a good pour of PVW to go out and run my sump pumps and yell at the rain gods for doing this to me again. It may be the only thing that keeps me sane on those days, and is now kind of tradition when I'm up all night dealing with it.
dSculptor
Just visited the 20 the other day, special occasion...my birthday, I also broke open my EC18,had some EC20, VW 13 rye, and some barterhouse! It was a good day. Made me think that instead of only waiting for these "special occasions", I may start this ritual ,like say ..once a month, I'm sure I can come up with something "special" each month. tigerlam92
A couple of years ago it had been PVW15 and then LotB were my daily pour. I probably drink any one of the version every 2-3 weeks now. Usually more often when I have a fresh bottle open then it slow down as the level goes down, hahaha. Nowadays more often than not, someone comes by, a family member who heard about Pappy and know nothing about it and really can't appreciate it, would ask for a drink and we would share the pours together. I usually guide them to ECBP or something like that instead but oh well it's fun to share anyhow. The worse is when my brother said "oh, it's just ok" for the 2009 PVW20 last week. OK, then why the hell are you drinking it or asked for it and it's not the first time he had my Pappy's, said it in my head only . He said the same to the VOF10 as well which is one of my favorite and that bottle is really a good one. LOL We are just bourbon geeks, oh I mean enthusiasts. MarkEdwards
Well, I've got several Lot Bs, a couple of 15s, a couple of 20s and a couple of 23s. I only have one of the rye. I tend to have some whenever I'm out of the mood for other stuff, so that the Pappy last a bit longer.
HD 335
Technically I don't have any Pappys, only an ORVW however it's still sealed for a special occasion. I guess that only means if I every added a Pappy that I would probably rarely drink from it

I guess that only means if I every added a Pappy that I would probably rarely drink from it Hey! ORVW counts. More often than not, I have at least one bottle of something VanWinkle open. Right now it's Pappy 15 and ORVW 10 107. As far as how often I partake, let's just say that these are ones I don't pour from as often as I do other offerings, and leave it at that. I don't have any Pappy 23, but do I have plenty of ORVW 10 107. I only have a couple each of the Lot B's, Pappy 15's and Pappy 20's left in the bunker. These will probably have to last me because I can't foresee being able to purchase them at anywhere near a reasonable price anymore. Can't complain. It's been a good ride, and I have, and still do enjoy it. Cheers! Joe
