What is the average age on the juice in this bottle? Any of you out there use this as a sipper or is it more of a mixer?

Since it's a blend of all ten recipes it's hard to conjecture on the age. Considering its labeled Straight with no age statement the only thing we know is everything in it is at least 4 years old. I think its probably used mostly in cocktails, but it's not bad stuff for sipping either. My only knock on it is the low proof.

I drink it at one of the bars I frequent. Their selection isnt great, but the location is. Right on the river with a huge deck. If I ask nice they will even put it in the refrigerator for me. When Im in the mood for something lighter it hits the spot.

I'm a big fan of FRYL and always will be. Like many, if not most people on this site, I've got bourbon's ranging from 80 to 130+ proof and some days I like to relax, have an good, easy sipping whiskey, and not concern myself with trying to over analyze it. This is a fine bourbon regardless of proof and price, IMHO.

I've also found that for me it's a good one to have when trying out a new cigar and I want to have some bourbon while picking apart the new stogie :grin:

While the private selections are by far my favorite FR's, you'll always find an open YL in my house.

Four Roses overlords, if you're listening, bump this offering up to 86 proof. I truly think 86 proof is a sweet spot and i find the few point change remarkable in terms of keeping flavor Casual drinkers won't notice, enthusiasts will buy more of it, and you'll still have a natural delineation between the price and shelf tiers of your whiskey.

No consultation fee either.

I too always have a YL on hand. Perfectly good sipper and that 10 recipe combo reveals layers uncommon in a 14-16.00 bottle. Granted a higher proof version would be MUCH appreciated but as is and for the $$ I appreciate it neat, LOVE it as a moderator in vattings (2YL/1WT101/1W12), use it for cooking and it doesn't hurt my feelings if someone visits and insists on dumping soda in it.

I too recall something about 6yrs but I cant recall where I got that. I just buy it and enjoy it.

I've participated in a couple of FR barrel proof selections recently, and I did something each time that I would HIGHLY recommend if you have the means.

So, as I've learned, it's typical for the selector to receive a selection of 10 samples, one of each recipe. I tasted these blind in a single elimination style competition. I was pouring small samples for each sample tasting (< 1/2 ounce), and if a sample "lost" I would dump the remainder into a 3rd glass before moving onto the next sample. Eventually, the glass ended up with about 3 oz of a melange of all 10 recipes at barrel strength. This combination (on each occasion) BLEW AWAY the single barrel that was selected as the "winner".

God, I would absolutely love to see a barrel proof yellow label, either a regular release or a GS/SE. I will beat that dead horse forever.

It is the only 80 proof I buy and I like it more than the SmB. Extremely nice on a summer day neat. I can't even imagine mixing it. I'm always for more proof but it is great at 80 proof too.

I blended a version of this up maybe 18 months ago. Bought all the recipes from TPS (when they shipped) and created five or so different blends. It was really fun if a little expensive. Binny's typically sells all 10 recipes so you can basically do the same thing. I used a five gallon carboy and a siphon. Let it marry for about a week.

I too did this a short while ago. I haven't tried it yet as its a small sample and still marinating. Once the weather cools I will crack this one and agree that an LE or GS version would be a HUGE hit.

And I seem to remember hearing that there are multiple ages of some of them...

After our barrel selection, we each made our own personal blend from our leftover samples. Because we tended to drink more from the samples that we enjoyed most, the volume of each recipe was inversely proportional to its individual ranking. Despite this, most of us enjoyed our blend at least as much as our individual favorite. Because we all took notes, I am going to call this scientific proof that you cannot come up with a less than stellar blend of all ten recipes.

I think I remember JR also saying avg age in the FRYL was about 5 yrs ... you're getting a good bump in age when blending the store select recipes, but it still is a great way to make your own limited edition small batch.
