had a nice gravy day at work today, then came home and enjoyed my absolute favorite whiskey, Dickel 9 year.

After another pissy day at work I had several pours of GD 9 yr.

I must say 4I you were spot with this reccomendation! Now that I have a source for this it's time to bunker some.

After multiple trips to KY in the last year to take care of my folks, I was FINALLY able to sneak away for a day and visit a couple distilleries. Well, the Four Roses Distillery and the Heaven Hill Bourbon Heritage Center, anyway. The winter weather appears to have made for a slow day, so I got a pretty personalized experience.

At Four Roses, I was able to taste: FRYL, FRSmB, FRSB, and I got a couple tasting samples of Gift Shop OESK and OBSO since I was trying to decide which to buy for myself (went with the OESK). I'm embarrassed to admit that this was my first time trying the Yellow Label, and it was really good! The Four Roses DNA was strong, but I got a lot of chocolate notes I don't typically see in Four Roses. Yet another humbling reminder that more expensive does not always equate to better.

I did the tasting tour at the Bourbon Heritage Center. The place was pretty well deserted by the time I got there, so I was the only one participating. I got to check a lot of Heaven Hill whiskies off my "want to try" list. All in all, I was able to taste Bernheim 7 yr, Larceny, William Heavenhill (not sure which one this was), Henry McKenna, and VSOF 12 yr. For the rye bourbons, I strongly preferred Henry McKenna to William Heavenhill, which frankly just tasted to me like a mellower Henry McKenna 10. Bernheim 7 was great, and I think I liked it better than the taste of PHC8 I got on Saturday. Much more flavorful than I was expecting. Larceny was outstanding. I would pick Larceny over Maker's Mark ten times out of ten. I was excited my tasting tour guide let me substitute VSOF 12 for HHSS, since I have two bottles of HHSS and have never tried VSOF12. I have to say, VSOF12 was MUCH more appealing to my palate than any Buffalo Trace wheater besides WLW. Maybe ORVW10/107, but I'll need to refresh my memory at some point.

All in all, I learned a lot about my taste preferences today. Heaven Hill's house style of wheated whiskey and bourbon lines up with my palate much better than the BT/VW style. I would buy a bottle of any the HH wheaters (or Bernheim) that I tried today, which is not something I can say about BT wheaters. Also, Four Roses Yellow Label is an outstanding bourbon, and I would be glad to drink it any day of the week.

Cheap bourbon wins again!

I found this very interesting and informative. Thanks for the report. I am semi-serious about trying to sell my family on Kentucky for our summer vacation.

Having grown up in KY, I am not a big fan of Kentucky Summers, but maybe your SoCal lifestyle will make the heat and humidity more tolerable for you. Depending on your taste in bourbon, a trip to KY might actually end up saving you money in the long run if you have the same results I do. Apparently my palate prefers the cheap stuff . . .

That eagle rare 101 was one of my all time favorites when I tried it. Haven't tried the weller centennial yet. How was it?

Fabulous stuff and perhaps my favorite of the three, though I too am a huge fan of the ER10/101. The Centennial is very well rounded and we were getting more dark cherries than I remembered from past samplings. It's a pity it's so hard to find now but definitely worth seeking out.

A little CEHTBP 129 proof since I just got some in. My primary pour for the evening was 4R PS SiB OESQ. I've been working on this for a few nights in a row now. Unlike the usual "trying to kill the bottle" because I'm not fond of it and need the shelf space, I'm loving this bottle quite a bit and am near the end so I'm working on it to clear the shelf space for other 4R PS's I have in the bunker.

A little HH BIB gold label to bring up the rear and close out the evening.

Been busy lately at work, and at home. Haven't had anything in a few days. Poured some HH 6 yr BIB when I got home from work today. 'Nuff Ced. :grin:

Having some ER10y while watching Tumbstone (the movie). Love this movie......and the bourbons good too.

A small pour of ER10 from 2012 (just opened). Unremarkable. As far as single barrels go, I've experienced greater variability in ER10 than any others.

A pour of Barterhouse after killing off a HW Double Rye. Third pour of Barterhouse from the bottle, last was a couple weeks ago and it seems better than the last time.

Started with some Booker's 25th before moving up to 2014 GTS. Holy sh!t this is some good bourbon (not that I had any reservations when purchasing). Thinking this might be the best GTS I've ever owned. :yum:

Craked a 'new' Willet Family Estate Bourbon, 11-yr, 121.6 proof. Seemed a bit woody at first; but after a bit of time in the glass, and with the addition of a bit of water, it became a much better dram. Nice nose (lots of brown sugar!); decent, if still a bit woody palate with some complexity that will require further examination, and a very nice long slow finish, fading to an unexpected sweetness that I found very comforting.

Hard to move away from the GTS, but trying to make room to poured some GBS OESO . . . and not one bit sad I did. Damn - just really feeling it on a Thursday night!
