Richnimrod
Had a small pour of a mingled pair I made a good many months ago....EC-18 & ECBP in a 3-to-1 ratio. Very nice!... and, very typical of the better HH offerings.I like it a lot, even if I say so myself.... Not that I actually had much to do with making it; just deciding what to mingle. flahute
'14 WLW. This is a powerful beast that is a challenge to tame. Had the first pour last night and didn't get it right. It was too oak forward as well. It's opened up a bit after a day and the wheated sweetness is starting to come through. I think it will blossom into something wonderful in a couple more days. 393foureyedfox
opened up a gold HHBIB today to start making some bourbon chocoloate covered cherries, and am now drinking some of it while listening to some old motown 70's stuff on Pandora. both are nice.... Hit all the right notes for me. Nose was classic wheater, taste was full on freight train of goodness and the finish may still be going. If I drink sub 100 now it needs to be alone or the first pour. Otherwise they seem too thin and just not satisfying.
kcgumbohead
WT Diamond. A friend gave me a sample of this awhile back and I decided to hold off a bit, last night was its time. Mt wife commented on how light the color was before I even had a first sip, apparently shes become accustomed to those barrel proofers in my glass.I like the WTD, its was a pleasant pour sweet/spicy/mild oak, overall very nice. I found myself wanting a bit more body as the low proof at times felt thin but I liked the flavors. I would not however pay anything near what its going for in the stores. I enjoyed it and appreciate the sample but that's as far as my WTD experience will go. Other WT expressions like RB and RRSmb are slam dunks over the Diamond IMO. jaycamm
I've been digging the Beam 12. At 12 years it is full flavored. At 86 proof it is easy to drink. An addictive combination.

When I add water to the barrel proofers, it's only a small amount metered out with an eye dropper. I always start with a small sip neat and then add a couple drops or three. On my second taste of the WLW mentioned above, the first sip taken neat was much better than the first sip neat right after popping the bottle the previous night. I also added less water than the previous night. I think this is going to be one that performs very well with minimum water added.I'm in the same boat as you on the sub 100's. If I have a hankerin' for ETL, for example, I make sure it's the first thing I drink that night.
dcbt
I'm probably in the minority here, but I tend to think sucking down any liquid that is majority alcohol can't be good for your insides, so I tend to dilute the BP stuff down to 100 proof. (I fear the scenario you all have described, where once you get set on BPs you have a hard time going sub 100 proof.) There are some exceptions that I pour very small amounts of very rarely (GTS and WLW for example), but most barrel proofers like Stagg Jr, ECBP, MMCS, Bookers, etc, I'll either vat or dilute a bit. I won't do that with some of the 100+ proofers that aren't quite BP (like ORVW or PVW15), but those do fall under the small amounts very rarely umbrella. It's probably why I haven't jumped on the OGD114 train. I do have a bottle but I mainly play around with vatting it with 86-90 proofers to see what I can create. That's not to say I want my bourbon weak, as 1783 is the only sub-90 proofer I think I buy; my sweet spot is the 90-100 proof range.

Just can't do them in the same night if the BP's come first. I do, however, enjoy the sub 100's even more if it's been a few days since a BP bourbon.I would agree with what was said above that 107-110 is a sweet spot for me also. I add a couple drops to OGD114 and even more to higher proofs.
