What bourbon did you pass up today? Fall/Winter 2014

I saw a couple of WT Kentucky Spirit @ $42. It's single barrel, has a bottled date, no distilled date. Anyway, I thought about it. I looked it up on "bourbon of the month". Everybody seemed to say: not better than Rare Breed, save tour money, and the famous-it was good many years ago. Also I saw Cutty Sark Prohibition. I may go back for that one.

Passed on a bottle of EC23 for $249. I sure would like to try it but that is a bit steep for me. I did grab a bottle of ECBP though.

I tried a sample of the Cutty Prohibition and was surprised by how much I liked it. Much better than their standard offering, and how many 100 proof scotches do you find under $30?

the same thing is sitting here on shelves wearing a SAOS rye label with a tag of $58. I know they want to keep up their 'elite' image, but methinks they need to rethink it

ECBP multiple bottles $65 but I have two bunker already. I can't believe I passed on W12 either but I have 1.5 of those too. There were 5 bottles of that and also 5 OFBB too. I have one OFBB already and it is OK but not mind blowing to me. Six months ago I would have bought a lot but now I just have so much bourbon. I was completely surprised to find all of this stuff though which is why I posted.

Yeah I know. Pricing is higher than MSRP by 10 to 40 per bottle but that is not so bad for my area. There was also MWND, PHC8, PHC7, and Baby Saz (multiple bottles of each) and I know those are hard to get some places too. If it makes you feel better BTAC and PVW/ORVW are nonexistent or ultra - gouge priced here.

Give it another six months to a year Paul and you will really wish you had not passed on as many of these as you did. While I would not have cleared the shelves, I would have at least grabbed a bottle of each if the prices were decent. Almost every time I have passed on getting more bottle of something I already had multiples of already, I have regretted it down the road. Most of the time it was when I was pouring the last of the bottle, but in some cases it was thinking I could find it again and couldn't.

Good for you! I think many of us get caught up all too often in the "OMG - This is SO hard to find, and it is great whiskey - I can't let it sit on a shelf!", regardless of what our stocks may or may not look like. Which - isn't a swipe at them (or us rather, as I'm in that bucket more often than I'd care for ), but it is refreshing to see folks eschewing the groupthink. And for sharing out here. Cheers sir!

Thanks for the positive reinforcement! That is exactly my dilemma (it's nearly never available, it's good whiskey, the price is not outrageous, but I already have some in the bunker and I have more bourbon than I can ever drink).

But the internet peer pressure is too much (plus I have friends in distant places to think about). I think I am going back.

I went back and picked up a few bottles. There are no bargains to be had. Here are some prices, which may make some of you feel better:

W12 $49 (bought one, at least 4 left)

ECBP $65 (got the last two of those)

OFBB $100 (got two, there are three left)

EC23 $299 (no thanks)

EC21 $249 (no thanks)

BTAC ER17, Saz 18, Handy and Stagg $499 each (no thanks)

Passed on Burnside bourbon from Oregon (supposedly a 71% corn mashbill according to one source, bottled at 96 proof) as well their Oregon Oaked bourbon from Eastside Distilling. Apparently new in Georgia. Supposedly they are making this themselves although that is not 100% clear (SKU has them listed as an NDP, at least with regard to whiskey) and it is reportedly around 4 years old. The Oregon Oaked is the Burnside aged an additional 60 days in a local Oregon oak charred barrel. I am inclined to stick with sourced whiskey until proven otherwise.

Also have a Cherry Bomb whiskey flavored with Oregon cherries as well as a "Marionbarry" whiskey that are reportedly both sourced whiskey from BT.

Barrel size and the length of aging are a bit unclear. Think I am going to have to try these before considering a purchase...
