Passed on a Forged Oak at $79.99. Would rather spend that on a bottle of EHTBP...just sayin

Assuming you can find one. They aren't exactly easy.

No kidding! the CEHTBP's dried up here real fast..Haven't seen a ECBP since release 3 and it appears none of my stores are getting any Forged Oak.

All is not bad news since I have an ample invenotry of OGBIB and OGD114.

Saw the new Woodford Rye at $42. Also passed on a shelf full of Hirsch 20-year American Whiskey, not exactly sure what that is.

Passed on WT Diam and 2008 WT American Spirit. Almost pulled the trigger on the AS, but for the price, everyone dumps on it, so I settled for a couple of cheaper options.

Any opinions on AS?

Concerning the Hirsch Selection 20 yo American Whiskey...

What is known: It was distilled in Illinois on Feb. 27, 1987 (date on the label) from bourbon mash and aged in used cooperage.

What is not known: What distillery it is from, who contracted the distillation (if applicable), and where it was aged before it was tanked and the stock was purchased.

The other bourbon forum has speculation from some very knowledgeable people that it was distilled in either Peoria or nearby Pekin. As I live in Peoria, I purchased a bottle for the combination of novelty and curiosity. Still forming an opinion, I only tasted a little bit of it. I remember the age being very apparent.

Johnny Drum Private Stock - $27 (not read enough reviews about it to pull the trigger)

WR Double Oaked SB - $58 (asked store owner to open a bottle and allow me a taste - he declined)

Well, there was 12+ bottles on the shelf, so I will wait.

Wathen's Single Barrel $32.95 If it is available next month I might try, I do like to try new bourbons.

1792 Ridgemont Reserve $32.99 Might try it again, it's been maybe 5 years or so.

Russell's Reserve 10 Yr. Old $32.99 Might try it again, it's been maybe 5 years or so.

WT AS was a limited edition released several years ago and is hard to find now, at least it is where I am, so if you see a bottle and it is a decent price (less than $100) you might want to get it on the theory that it might be your only chance to do so. Or you may think that is a piss-poor reason to buy anything, which would also be valid. It depends on how you approach the entire bourbon thing.

I have a bottle but have not opened it, so I can't comment on taste, but what Paddy said is something I have often read before: AS is better than WT Diamond, not as good the WT limited edition before AS (I forget the name), and not as good a value as WT RB.

doubt it. I was in a store today picking up gifts for friends when I saw ETL on the shelf and was about to grab one for a friend, until I saw the $60 price tag. Further down the aisle was a sign saying the have W12 in the lock cabinet, so I walked over just to see the degree of crazy. it was $70 for a 750 and $120 for a 1.75...............EC12 is still $28.........I grabbed my $10-22 bottles and left

on a side plus though, the shelf was still chock full of ugly-label OGDBIB at $16........and finally saw the new JBBIB, but couldnt get myself to buy it at $20, not just yet...

Yup, once I can get my hands on a stash of store select OWA, it's time to pull my claws in and wait out the storm.

Pretty much the same for me yesterday. Almost. Biggest pass was AE CS for $170. One I shouldn't have passed on was ETL for $34.99. I've got a bunch already, so I figured I'd leave the last couple of bottles for someone else. What can I say?

Now I'm going to contribute to thread drift and cross posting. A few folks do it a lot, so why not a moderator.

As per my post in the "What Did You Buy" thread:

I did see some Stagg Jr. at a local store today. I passed on it because I wasn't sure what batch it was. Came home and found out it was from Batch#3. As luck would have it, I had to go back out again later, so I went back and picked one up. I was pretty happy. The price was $10 less than I thought it was.

Actually I was wrong. This store at one time had the Stagg Jr priced at $69.99. The last time I was there, it was marked down to $59.99. It had been further marked down to $46.99, so it was actually $13 cheaper, not $10.

Okay, carry on.

Cheers! Joe

Up in Wisconsin today, I passed for the first time on AAA 10 year. This place has a seemingly infinite supply of 1.0L bottles, but the price is $24.99 now, up from $17.99 a year ago. They're notorious for marking up anything that even smells like it could be in demand. I think I'm done with them for good.

I'm thinking the same thing Joe. You told me where they are and even though the store is only 5 minutes from my house, I decided to pass on them as well.

Come on Joe and Gary, seasoned pros that you are...your first choice is correct, no doubts . ETL is fine, simple, straighforward bourbon of which I'm glad to have a few from the $20 to $25 era but it's not $34.99 fine...even in these times.

Aw c'mon Thad. It's all good. Other folks deserve a break sometimes too, and besides, it ain't that close to the magic $50 threshold yet. Well, at least in most places. :skep:
