Stupid, stupid, stupid! Saw Baker's for $32 at Costco while passing through Louisville. Was on my way to Liquor Barn so I just left them there instead of buying two or three. Did I mention how stupid this was?

I wish Costco in Indy would get something good in. They typically carry Kirkland and that's it. Over the holidays, they had a Knob Creek gift set. I am going there tomorrow so we'll see if they have anything new.

Did you find that it was $37ish at LB (on sale)?

Passed on OWA for 31. Too high, though this store is always high on all prices. I don't know why I bother except it's closest to my house.

One of my favorite places is a smaller shop with a great selection, but with prices always a touch higher than the Liquor Barns, Binny's and The Party Sources of the world. They have great single barrel selections and will set aside some special, allocated bottles on your behalf. For me, this is no different than shopping at the mom and pop store and paying a touch more than Cost Co. A nicer shopping experience with some great products make it worth the extra few bucks.

I know what you're saying, but none of that applies to the place I referenced. It's a large chain store that still somehow lacks both selection and knowledge. It's just convenient to me, that's the only selling point.

Visited a store to buy a bottle of odd scotch for a gift. On the top shelf he had a VW10 for 499.

Out empty I went.

Ewh! and I've been passing on it for $89.

$89?? Clear the shelf. Even with pricing difference in some states, that is unusually low. Is AE sub $20?

Sounds like the rye price.

Yeah, here in Indy, the rye is $89 and the cask strength $159. The first release or two of the rye were not placed on the shelf. The most recent release was and has been sitting there for a while. Not sure about the cask strength. I have seen it at a few stores but it wasn't on the shelf.

The regular AE is everywhere. It seems like every store has their own blend or two or three.

Passed on Lost Prophet at $135. I'm more interested in this one than the previous Orphans, but not enough for that price.

Interesting, of course Aneas Coffey is generally credited with developing the first industrial level column still, in fact the forerunner of all today's modern column stills. One would think an original style Coffey would bring the new make distillate off at a lower proof than the modern improved (read more efficient) column stills. That and aging in new charred barrels may produce a whisky more akin to the early style of Canadian Whisky.

Of course it remains a mass produced bulk blending whisky yet more intriguing to me than the 90 day wonders some micros are pumping out.

Not bourbon, but I ran across what is supposedly a TX exclusive for the time being "Crown Royal Hand-Selected Barrel", which is apparently just one of the ryes used in the standard CR blend.

I have to say I'm on my second bottle of this and I like it. I'm not a Crown fan (other than the Cask 16) but this is good whiskey.

Barrel select Blanton's- too bland, not enough body, even the owner admitted it was a bit weak.

Barrel select 4R OESF- too woody for my taste, pass.

Accidentally passed up some Michter's 10 yr. rye and some other stuff, but I will follow up on that soon.

Not really a Crown fan myself (don't dislike it, just not particularly fond of it).

I was kind of intrigued by this though, and with your recommendation I think I'll grab a bottle and give it a go.

Passed up Jeff Ocean III

Yeah, who hasn't... ;) I think that the new release of Jeff Ocean will go down with the likes of Bulleit 10, Jeff Collaboration and WT Forgiven as regular passes that kind of go without saying.

Long time reader and first post. Stopped by a store I normally don't visit and noticed ETL for $99.99. I asked the manager if it was a mistake and he said it wasn't. ETL is difficult to find in Memphis but is easy to find South of the border in Mississippi. I told the manager I could get the same bottle more than $60 less just 10 minutes away and he said to enjoy my drive. I'm now enjoying my $35.99 ETL.
