ugh, where to even start...(keep in mind this was over the past 4 years)

Black Maple Hill NAS

High West Bourye

Michter's Toasted Barrel

Rowan's Creek

Noah's Mill

OGD 114

OGD BIB

Wathan's Single Barrel

Evan Williams Single Barrel 2002-2004

Templeton Rye

Whistle Pig

Masterson's Rye

Hirsch Collection 20 year

Almost much every dusty I've tried

Willett Pot Still

Prichard's Double Barrel

Michter's Small Batch

Corsair Triple Smoke

I'm sure there's more, but those are off the top of my head. Win some, lose some I guess. Some times you gotta take risks to find out what you *don't* like.

Interesting in that I didn't buy a single bottle on this list.

Wathen's for sure, BMH was a waste for me also and 2 that were gifted to me, so I don't know if those count or not..but, Michter's SmB unblended, and the Kinnickinnic .Blah

Consider yourself lucky. I also forgot to add Jefferson's Ocean.

I haven't bought much bourbon these days. This year I got a PHC 8, and two different store selections of barrel strength Four Roses.

I'm not a big fan of the new bourbons hitting the marketplace.

I've owned two bottles of BMH NAS. The first I bought a while ago (2009 maybe?) in Tennessee. The second I bought last year. The difference was remarkable.

I've already said previously here that the best use of the BMH is as a strategic distractor on my bar. I have a buddy who likes to fancy himself a connoisseur of all fine things despite usually mixing his bourbon with coke. He's bought into the BMH as being particularly fancy, so it keeps him occupied.

I must have missed when you said this the first time. That is a DAMNED good idea. Just enough hype surrounding it that the dabbler will happily confuse it for the real thing, and it would take a serious interest on his part to figure out it isn't - at which point you could go "wow, I didn't know that! You really know your stuff!"

Hilarious.

God I probably could.

It's kind of ridiculous. He turns his nose up at stuff like BT and OWA, insisting that he only drinks "good" bourbon (i.e. >$50). He's a good guy overall, but sometimes annoying.

  • 4 weeks later...

Fortunately, not too many bottles:

Bulleit bourbon

Old Portrero 18th Century Whiskey

Cadenhead Caol Ila 29 yr.

Trader Joe's 23 yr. Speyside single malt

Kirkland 18 yr. single malt

Trader Joe's bourbon

I guess that's not too bad, considering I've probably bought more than 40+ bottles this year alone.

I really hate to admit it, but High West A Midwinter Night's Dram Act 2.3 didn't do it for me. The aroma had too much bizarre pickle/vinegar and threw off my palate even after three or four individual pours. Luckily a friend loved it so I swapped it to him for more traditional fare.

I'm with you there. I didn't get any pickle or vinegar, but I thought it was a thoroughly mediocre drink. I'm glad I didn't buy any, just didn't have a lot of good flavor to it.

One I tried recently that I'm definitely glad I didn't buy is Corsair Ryemageddon. That stuff was not bad, but very strange. Big black licorice note on the finish, but generally strange and nothing like most bourbon or rye.

The one bottle I regret of all is Jack Daniels Unaged Rye. It was dirt cheap compared to other areas and I thought it would be nice to try rye straight from the still, but...I was wrong. It was not good and I've got 3/4 bottle after 2 years. However, I display it proudly as a reminder to not buy out of curiosity alone

That bottle of Old Blowhard was like a mean ugly step child. Couldn't get it out of the house soon enough.

Maker's 46.

Opened it took a healthy pour, sipped it for 45 minutes and that nights pour went down the drain.

Let it sit for a week. The same as the first night.

It tasted like I was chewing on cheap cigarettes. Oh well ... felt terrible at the thought of pouring it down the drain, so gave it away to a buddy of mine for free. I gave him full disclosure on my opinion of it, but he still wanted it so ...

The JD Unaged Rye was the only bottle I bought that was universally hated. I have not met someone who liked it.

I found it to be useful in a few cocktails and it may have the most intriguing heavy rye bread nose I can remember. Others got all bananas but I seem to have a lack of ability to pick up on the banana nose. That said I like most everything and it still wasn't very interesting on its own after the first taste or two!

I try to defend it in that I was not at all tricked about the juice inside. It's very clearly unaged rye "whiskey". In that respect, I couldn't help my stupid curiosity and compulsion to try new things.

EHT SmB. The best thing about it was the packaging. I found the bourbon way too hot and thin.

This is interesting because I had the same impression when I first tasted it at the store. However, a few months later, I decided to buy a bottle (on sale) to give it another chance. The first few pours were meh, but I began to enjoy it more as the bottle opened up.

The issue I have with the brand is the price. Assuming it is BT mashbill #1, I can opt for BT or ER at a significantly lower price, albeit also a lower proof which I believe does affect the flavor in a slightly negative way. For the longest time it was around $40 in my area and then jumped to $50 last Spring (although I can still get it for the upper $30s at one location). At $50, it is competition with FR Barrel Selects to which it loses to every time.

You are right. The tube is pretty cool looking. I am not sure why but I saved it. It looks cool on the upright freezer in my mud room.

I have found that a 50/50 mix of Stagg Jr. and BT approximates the CEHT profile with a slightly higher proof (~110) yet less heat and not as thin and for much less cost. I just bought a CEHT BP (also on sale) which I suspect cost me almost double what I would pay to made the blend. But, now I have another cool looking tube.
