Gillman
The latest from this Ontario artisan distillery now owned by Campari. This whisky is the first from the house that really wowed me. It has a silky mouthfeel with a full, nutty/sherried flavour. The back of the presentation carton says the whisky was aged in "American white oak" barrels for three years, then re-distilled in a pot still (!), then aged to about 12 years old in ex-cab sauv barrels from France (French oak), and finally combined with other (unspecified) whiskies for "balance". Now that's blending. 43% ABV. Although intuitively I'd incline away from anything re-distilled, the results are really good. Maybe John Hall really is a genius. Gary P.S. It is unclear if the 12 years of claimed age includes the first 3 years before redistilling, I'd think it probably does. I think the "special" character I note might come from the French wood. kjbeggs
My go-to store offered me a bottle of this today. ($79.00)Wish I knew more about it. so many good choices out there this time of year, hard to spend on one that's unknown to me.
jaycamm
I respect John Hall as an artist who is trying to stir up excitement for Canadian Whisky. That being said, I am reluctant to buy any of his limited releases as I don't particularly enjoy regular 40 Creek.
portwood
My go-to store offered me a bottle of this today. ($79.00)Wish I knew more about it. so many good choices out there this time of year, hard to spend on one that's unknown to me.With the number of quality whiskies available in the USA for under $80, I think I could drink a different good bottle of bourbon/rye/scotch/armagnac every month for the rest of my life (49 now) without touching this one.(prices being what they are in Canada, although $70 (the going price here) is high for Canadian whisky, it is hard to find many good bottles under that price.)
