Stagg Jr preference for 128.7 or 132.x?

Found two Stagg Jr batches and was wondering what info or opinions are available on these two. Took a picture of the 132.x and can't make out the exact number, but guessing 132.4 for proof, the other one is 128.7 - any recommendations between these two? I think the 128.7 is behind glass, while the 132.4 is on the shelf.

They are priced at around $55

I haven't had Stagg Jr before...

If your suggestion is based on my personal tastes of items consumed in the last month... Last night opened a bottle of presumably late 2013 ETL and found it amazing. Previous evening had THH (2012?) comparing with Willett 6 year rye, actually preferred the Willett that evening, probably the second best pour I had last month. This particular THH isn't my favorite of the years, not that I've done a vertical tasting. Booker's 7-2013, good. 2014 4R OBSK, better. Bulliet, notch or two below Booker's. Barterhouse, preferred over OBSK Weller 12, better than Bulliet, depends on the day for me... it is not consistently what I want to drink. I know I had Mitchner's but didn't leave an impression. Can't remember brand of pretending to be Texas whiskey that tastes like it is cut with neutral vodka. Probably would have picked up BT, but don't remember seeing it for a few weeks. That's my quick rundown of the drinks I remember having last month and opinions... which Stagg JR?

That would probably be TX Blended Whiskey out of F&R Distillery. Because it IS cut with vodka.

As for your Stagg Jrs, the 128 is batch 2 and 132 is batch 3 (I think anyway). I haven't cracked open my batch 2 yet (still working through batch 1 bottles) but it seemed to have gotten better reviews than batch 1. I don't remember hearing much on batch 3 yet.

Batch 3 is consistently getting the best reviews out of the 3 so I'd get that one if you have a choice. (I personally have batch 1 and 3 and prefer the 3) It's possible they aren't that much different (2 and 3) or that you could prefer the batch 2, but given the unknowns you may as well go with the consensus and get 3.

I drank a bottle of batch 3 and it was good, but not anything I'd spend time searching for. I would buy the batch 2 just for a compare, as I have 0 experience with it.

May as well put another plug in here for a 50/50 vatting of Stagg Jr. with regular Buffalo Trace. A really, really good blend IMO that ramps up the BT, while toning down the Stagg Jr. You still end up with a beefy pour at around 110 proof.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have tried another bottle and its just not that good for the price. It is hot at any proof. Just disappointing.

I completely agree. I did the same thing and now it is one of my favorite pours.
