It would have to be an ORVW 23 decanter set for me. The store had it sitting out in the open, collecting dust. They were asking $350 back in 2011. I tried to get them to come down, but they wouldn't budge. I went back for it a week later, and it was gone. It had sat there for so long that I figured I had plenty of time to think on it. Of course there were other times where I saw several bottles of BTAC and PVW on the shelves. Not clearing those shelves isn't really a regret as I simply couldn't clear out my bank account.

I've left plenty of good stuff on the shelf, but what still pains me most is the thought of all the PHC wheated I passed up.

I know that pain even though I managed to get several home. Same with PHC 2007.

FR 2014 SmB LE. Saw it at retail but just didn't want to spend that much. Really wish I had but I'll make it somehow.

Glad to see this thread is active again. Sorry it's for the reason of missing out on great bourbons.

I got a PVW23 two years ago before I knew nuthin' from nuthin'. When my gf picked it up for us, the store clerk said "we also have the rye if you're interested". She asked me, and I said "nah, I'm not a rye guy".

It still haunts me.

My biggest regret is not buying some ND Old Taylor that someone offered to sell me.

I had a guy offer me half a case of Rusell's Reserve 101 once. I was new to the game and, gee, $35 a bottle seemed pretty pricey, so I only bought two. :banghead:

I mostly regret not taking the trouble to educate myself earlier on the different producers. I bought NDPs for years without realizing that's what they were, and never explored the bottom shelf until the past couple years. Luckily there is still lots of great bourbon out there for a fair price.

Ditto. A set sat at my local store for over a year for 349. I kept saying I'm going to get it one day. When I finally decided, it had been sold. I was sick

Another 3 bottle case of my favorite 2007 WLW at a pretty decent price.

Boy you can say this again! Oh, I have 2 bottles I won't need any more. Right! Along with PHC 10. Although I did buy more than two of those.

Over the last 12 years or so, the PVW and EC 18 walk bys are the most obvious rememberances , but I think I regret missing the Centennials and Old Charter Proprietor Reserves the most.

This is like, the feel good thread of the year. Funny how when I look back, at this point at least, the regrets of what was not bought are so much more numerous (probably around 30-40 bottles worth) than the regrets of what was bought (maybe 2-3 bottles). Not sure if that's more a sign of the escalating sellers' market, or of my escalating interest in the "whiskey lifestyle." If I had to name my second biggest regret (first would be too painful to relive!), it would probably be not clearing the shelf of ecbp the first and only time I saw it (batch #1). Then again, I'd feel guilty if I had ....

There have been a number of times when I find a stash of nice dusties, buy one to try at home, like it, return only to find the rest have been discovered and sold. My wife's new policy is for me to buy one, try it in the parking lot, and if I like it go back in and buy the rest. Her main reason is she gets tired of me bitching about what I should have done. I carry a sleeve of disposable shot glasses in each vehicle.

Unfortunately, I haven't been drinking bourbon for long but stumbled on this page and thought, wow, this is what the liquor shelves looked like a few years ago.

My regret would be not buying ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL of it.

Notice the Weller Centennial in the bottom right. *sigh* always late to the party.

Does that wonderful woman have a sister?

Hi John, the key is to find what you like and buy or stock up with what you like. For example I would only buy maybe 2 or 3 of those bottles.

We we are are jealous of Enoch. :) I already accepted that my wife thinks I'm ridiculous if I buy anything.

Take your pick:

Very early in my days as a beginner bourbon enthusiast (2006), I was lucky enough to have a two day trip to New York City. I had a few hours to myself one afternoon, so I took the subway out to Red Hook to make the pilgrimage to LeNell's. This was her bourbon shelf. At the time, I had no idea what to pick. And I could only bring one bottle back to Canada duty free. After much fretting and hand wringing, I decided on a Weller 12. Which at the time, I was quite happy with.

I can still hear her in my ear talking about her private bottling of a special very old rye. The first run sold out, "but I can put you on the list for the second release if you like." Me: "no thanks, I'm not sure when I'll be back."

That one keeps me awake some nights.

Dang. You could practically retire if you had one of those ryes and sold it on secondary. Would be much more fun to drink though.

That's a heck of a shelf there.

Found the entire Van Winkle line at a liquor store in Rome, but was too afraid of trying to transport anything back to the states without it being stolen/broken.
