cowdery
INDUSTRY SEMINAR ON BIOTERRORISM ACT HOSTED BY DISTILLED SPIRITS COUNCIL.WASHINGTON D.C. November 6, 2003 – The Distilled Spirits Council hosted a major industry seminar Oct. 29 in Washington, D.C., which brought together all sectors and tiers of the industry with federal and state officials to learn how to comply with the recently-adopted Bioterrorism Act.Scheduled to go into effect Dec. 12, 2003, the Bioterrorism Act was passed to protect the public from a threatened or actual terrorist attack on the U.S. food supply. The Act requires domestic and foreign food facilities -- including those involved with the production, bottling and warehousing of beverage alcohol -- to register with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In addition, the FDA must receive prior notice of products imported into the United States. "We all have a vested interest in securing our food supply against any bioterrorism threat," said Council President Peter Cressy. "At the same time, we all have a vested interest in ensuring that our products are delivered to our consumers in a timely and efficient manner."The seminar -- attended by suppliers, wholesalers, retailers, brokers and carriers -- featured FDA Deputy Director of the Food Safety and Security Staff Lou Carson as the guest speaker. Other presentations were made by the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association, Pernod Ricard USA, Jim Beam Brands Co. and Allied Domecq Spirits & Wine."This business chain seminar will not be the last step in our ongoing efforts to work together to comply with the Act," said Cressy. "We will continue our collaboration to ensure that our products reach the marketplace with the least amount of burden."
