Personally I prefer the smlb over the single barrel. This is only based on one bottle however, but Ive always preferred lower proof and generally found too much of the barrel oak flavor in most sbs.

Make sure to check out the GnR Live from the Roxy show on Youtube. It is amazing and will go well with any Bourbon you may be imbiding at the time. Its too bad that GnR couldn't keep it up, the show is mindblowing.

Having gotten to the last 1/3 of my bottle, I would say the SB version has really come together for me. At first I detected much more char, but now it just seems like a perfectly balanced, full flavored bourbon worth more than what I paid a year ago (around $30). Suddenly this has become my favorite "standby" although my bunker certainly does not reflect it (0 bottles in reserve). Time to head out, on Christmas eve, and try to stock up!

I think the KCSB is one of the best values around, much better than the regular KC and only $35 around here.

Thanks vader. What year? I know their first gig on video was at the roxy in 86. Ive got it on dvd as well as about 70 others.

The best vid from the old gnr is the ritz in nyc 88.

Massive fan, but not of kcsb!

Can't speak for N.C. but in Ga, Al, SC, & Tn you can't open a bottle on premises.

Now before you get to shocked it wasn't that many years ago you could buy it in most counties period and has only been offered by the drink in reasturants within the last 10 yrs

NC is probably the same. We can only buy liquor in state designated ABC stores that have a markup to provide funds for the state. It's pretty bland and a sterile experience compared to the other stores I've been in (OH, PA, VA). You walk into a nice store on the outside, once you walk in there are at least 10 video cameras and at my young age I dare say kids, going to just check your id, ring you up and wish you on your way. No store owner. No independent stores. It's more like walking into a McDonalds and all the same.

I'm working through my first KCSB store select. At 120 proof, it's a little hot, so adding just a couple drops of water brings it into my wheelhouse of 100-110. I'm liking it more and more as I get through the bottle. Regarding the OP's question, yes, the SB is worth the extra dough.

Chalk me up as another preferring KC to KCSB. I found the KCSB a bit ashy especially in the last half of the bottle, even with watering to 100 pf - KC seems more balanced. Perhaps a single barrel issue, but a store select from a trusted source suffered from the same issue, so I wonder if this is a characteristic JB wants to come through and it just isn't my thing. I don't get this characteristic at all in Booker's, although a bit younger but at higher proof.

That said, the preference is slight, but I'd only purchase another KCSB if I can taste first. Every KC bottle, purchased or from a bar have been consistently good/balanced.

I picked up a bottle of KBSB recently but decided to open up my other regular KC bottle first.

First impression of a freshly opened bottle of KC is mostly just alcohol and wood notes. I found I had to let this bourbon sit for quite some time to get some more smell/taste out of it.

But my first bottle got a lot better once it went a bit lower in the bottle.

After I finish this one, I am hoping the SB is a big step up. It was $10 more than the regular KC. (I paid $50 for the regular and $60 for the SB).

After drinking my second 750ml bottle of regular KC I can say that it is certainly not worth the price here, Which is $50.00.

I can get Buffalo Trace for $40 and it is more complex and I don't get any of that beam-funk taste.

The more I try Jim Beam products the more I dislike them. I am hoping the SB version is a BIG step above the regular KC.

I also have Bakers and Bookers, I am guessing those are quite a bit better than regular KC!

I have regular KC and KCSB opened on my bar right now. I find both to be excellent bourbons.

Not being a proof-hound, and with prices around me in IL ($30 for KC, $42-45 for KCSB), I actually think that the SB is not necessarily worth the extra money. With that said, I stumbled across a sale at Hy-Vee and purchased two of their store select bottles of KCSB for $35 each. At that price, SB all week long and twice on Sundays.

With those prices...I'd have tons of bourbon in my closet all the time.

I do and it's becoming a "problem."

Decided to open the SB version tonight and I must say it's a big step up from the regular KC.

I don't think I will ever buy the regular KC again :)
