BigBoldBully
Saw this bottom shelfer for the first time yesterday. Bought a bottle but can find very little online about it so far, and nothing turned up in the forums here. Does anyone know anything about it? The label says it's a straight, apparently sourced, 80 proof, bottled by "G & W Distillers Scobeyville, New Jersey." I will probably be trying it this week as part of a semi-blind tasting, and will share my notes.
KyleCBreese
I'm in NJ and I've never seen it, but a little research online looks like it comes from Laird's, which is in Scobeyville.http://www.lairdandcompany.com/products_spirits_domestic.htm
TunnelTiger
Well at least they are honest enough to say bottled by.
BigBoldBully
Right, bottled by "G & W" a label maintained by Laird & Co., which makes applejack but not whiskey. I wonder where they source the stuff from, and if any SBers have had it.
squire
The label says Kentucky Straight so I'm sure we have, I'm betting on Heaven Hill.
dSculptor
Haven't had it but got this.....Wish I was able to taste it, someone tried to preserve it.. had a wax seal but still evaporated....too bad. There's a small bit of what looks like sludge left in the bottom. Found this one also in my collection... BigBoldBully
Cool, dSculptor, you must have quite a collection. As to the sludge, I guess the old time G & W ad I saw applies--"Go Warily!"
r60slash5
Went to a new liquor store today saw a single bottle of G&W Private Stock for $9.99 on the bottom shelf. Hey, why not? Goggled it when I got home. Came up on this thread. Nice! Sipping it right now. 80 proof OK I'd like more, but I think it's bargain. $10.00 Kentucky Straight Bourbon what have you got to prove? Saw a tastng score of 81 on an old eTasting site. right in between Tom Moore, and Ancient Age both 81 too.
squire
Yes it is a bargain, 4 yr old Straight Bourbon for $9.99. Wouldn't pay much attention to those ratings though, anyone who can type google can blog a dozen reviews a month without actually tasting anything. BigBoldBully
The additional replies and info convinced me to do that semi-blind tasting I intended for last weekend. Up to bat were this one, 4R yellow label, Old Taylor 6yr, and Jeff small batch, so all at or near 80 proof. It was my first time trying the OT as well as the G&W, and it has been quite a while for the other two. After pouring 1/2 ounce of each into one of four identical glasses, the mrs mixed them up and wrote down the secret order. The G&W, surprisingly, turned out to be the one I noted smelled of faint berries and sweetened husks, and featured flavors including cotton candy and strawberry. Not a terrible sipper, and also mixed well with a splash of ginger ale. (FWIW, the 4RYL was the only one I identified correctly, noting lots of sweet corn and nougat, much as I recalled it. When I was trying the G&W, I thought it was probably the Jefferson's. The OT I figured was likely the G&W.)
squire
There are a few golden nuggets scattered amongst the gravel in the cheap whisky sea. Also a pleasure to find because we don't expect much when we don't pay much. Did teach me something though, which is not to form an opinion on any whisky until after it has been blind tasted. PaulO
On my first trip to a large liquor store in KY, I was surprised how many different 80 proof dogs and cats brands there are.
